FREDERICK JACKSON PERRIN, OF WALWORTI-I, WISCONSIN.
GOMPOSING-STICK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 23, 1912.
Application filed March 2, 1910. Serial No. 546,874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK J. Pan- RIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at l'Valwort-h, in the county of WValworth and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Composing-Stick; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements 1n printers sticks and has for one of its objects the construction of a stick having an easily adjusted knee adapted to be held firmly in its adjusted position.
One of the objects in view is the construction of a composing stick having its bottom wall provided with graduations and adjustable knee adapted to be held by a simple pivoted latch device in various positions corresponding to the graduations.
With the above and other objects in vlew the invention comprises certain combinations, constructions and arrangements I of parts, clearly described in the following specification and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the 1mproved stick, Fig, 2 is a transverse sectional view of the stick showing parts in plan view, Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view through the stick, showing the jaw or wall 7 in section, Fig. 4 is a detail view showing the construction of the pivoted latch.
Referring to the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention 1 denotes the bottom wall of the stick which is provided with a graduated longitudinal edge 2, preferably arranged in accordance with nonparell measure. The rear wall 3 is provided with spaced notches or recesses, arranged in accordance with the gage or graduations on the front edge of the bottom wall, while the end wall 4:, sometimes called the fixed jaw, is provided with a beveled or rounded cornor 5 adapted to allow the easy entrance of the thumb when the knee is close thereto, when short measure is being set. The knee 6 has its movable jaw or wall 7 rounded or beveled at 8 to correspond to the corner 5 of the end wall 4. The other wall or arm of the knee is adapted to slide against the rear wall 3, in the usual manner. This wall or arm 9 is held in position by a guide plate 10 which is secured at its upper end to the arm 9 and is bent against the outer face of the rear wall 3 and against the bottom face of the bottom wall 1. The forward or outer part of the arm or wall 7 is held closely to the bottom wall by a small clip 11, which engages the forward longitudinal edge of the bottom wall 1. The two arms of the knee are held in fixed position by a corner rod 12.
The arm 9 is formed with a slot to receive the sheet metal latch 13, which is provided with ears 14, whereby the same may be pivoted in place upon the pin lo A flat spring 15 is secured at one end to the pin 15, with its other end bearing against one end of the latch 13, so as to hold the forward end of the latch (which end has secured thereto a projection 16) adjacently to the wall 3, so that the projection 16 will engage one of the recesses or notches in the rear wall of the stick. By pressing on the rear end of the latch arm the projection 16 thereof may be moved away from the wall 3 and the knee may be readily moved to any position on the bottom wall 3. The latch arm 13 is pivoted to the arm 9 so that it will not project outwardly therefrom and can move by the slightest pressure thereon.
The improved stick enables a printer to work with greater speed than is possible with the sticks in current use, which are so constructed that the adjustment of the knee cannot be instantly effected with such ease as to require little thought or labor. The knee of the present invention can be adjusted by merely pressing the latch arm with the thumb or one of the fingers and sliding the same along the wall 3.
Having described my invention I claim A printers stick comprising a bottom provided with a type scale and a rear wall, said rear wall being provided with recesses on its inner face in accordance with the type scale, an angular knee movable on the stick having solid and hollow arms, the hollow arm being slidable adjacent the recessed face of the rear wall, while the solid arm 00- operates with the type scale, the hollow arm having one of its walls provided with an elongated opening terminating at one end in an enlarged circular portion, the hollow arm having an aperture in its wall which slides adjacent the recessed inner face, a pin extending transversely of the hollow arm and centrally thereof, a sheet metal latch member formed of one piece and correspondingly shaped with the elongated opening of the hollow arm and adapted to fit the same, said latch member having laterally projecting ears pivotally mounted upon said pin, a projection secured on one end of the latch member and extending through the opening of the wall of the arm which slides adjacent the recessed inner wall and adapted to en gage said recesses, a spring connected to the pin and having its free end bearing against one end of the latch member to hold the projection in engagement with the recesses,
an angular guide plate secured to the hollow arm and extending under the stick, and a clip secured to the free end of the solid arm 15 and extending under the stick adjacent the type scale portion thereof.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDERICK JACKSON PERRIN.
Witnesses RUTH STRAssEN, IRENE LANE.
