Description
'geiten ''tets getraut @Hite lJOSEPH DOUGLASS, OF MCCONNELLSTOWN, IENNSY-LVAN'IA. Letters Patent No. 71,719, dated Deember 3, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN IARD-MEASURES.
Be it known that I, JOSEPI DOUGLASS, of McGonnellstown, in the county of Huntingdon, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved,Yard-Measure; and I do hereby declare the following to be a, full land exact descl'i tiou of the same reference beinv had to the accom ant/infr drawinlrs ,which are made' art of 7 D D a 7 this specicatiou, and in which the iguredis a perspective'view.
This yard-stick has a handle at one end, and two projecting flanges, which mark the terminations of the measure, which may be ayard, a foot, or qther distance within the reach of the expanded arms. In the drawings, A is the yard-measure', having a handle, B, and fianges C C', at the termina-tions of the graduated portion. i d i 'Ihel right hand grasping-the handle, und the thumb o f that hand resting on the ange C, the edge of the goods is stretched between Bange C and flange C', whereon the thumb of the left hand rests. The thumb and finger now grasp the goods at this point, C', and carry it forward to the flange C, deposit under the thurnb oi' the right hand, and measure another length, as before.
The handie is comfortably grasped by the right hand, without releasing it, at :myv time, in the process of jmeasuring, and is much better than the yard-stick commonly in use; while the anges C C' afford more definite means of measurement than the end of the stick manipulated by the thumbs, and cdpable of variation in either direction at the' pleasure or by the carelessness of` .the meas'urer. I
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The yard-stick, with handle B and measuring-flanges C C', substantially as described.
JOSEPH DOUGLASS.
