JOHN R. MOORE, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
FOLDING STOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 16, 1912.
Application filed September 13, 1910. Serial No. 581,884.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN R. Moonn, citizen of the United States, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Stools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to folding stools and has for its object the provision of a comparatively simple and thoroughly efficient device of this character especially dc signed for use on street cars and similar vehicles to afford a seat for the motorman.
A further object is to provide a stool, the construction of which is such that the same may be quickly set up for use and compactly folded for storage or shipment.
A further object is to provide a folding stool including a stand or support formed of pivotally united frames, on one of which is pivotally mounted a seat having a depending catch adapted to engage a cross bar carried by the other frame for holding said seat in a horizontal position.
A still further object of the invention is.
generally to improve this class of devices so as to increase their utility, durability and efficiency.
Further objects and advantages will appear in the following description, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of a folding stool constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same; Fig. 3 is a side elevation partly in section, showing the stool folded; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the seat detached, looking at the bottom thereof.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The improved stool forming the subjectmatter of the present invention comprises a stand or support including front and rear frames, the side bars 5 of the rear frame being extended through the front frame and pivotally connected to the side bars 6 thereof by bolts or similar fastening devices 7, so as to permit said frames to be compactly folded.
The upper ends of the side bars 5 and 6 are projected longitudinally beyond the fastening devices 7 to produce extensions 8 adapted to form a support for a seat 9. Secured to the bottom of the seat 9, is a bracket 10 having spaced depending lugs 1.1, which bear against the exterior faces of the side bars 6 and to which they are pivotally connected by a rod 12. The up per ends or extensions of the side bars 5 are formed with inclined kerfs 13 in which is seated a transverse bar 14, said transverse bar being held against accidental displacement by bolts or rivets 15 extending through the bars 5 and 14, as shown.
Secured to the bottom of the seat 9 and disposed in advance of the bracket 10 are spaced ears 16 having laterally extending attaching flanges l7 and provided with transversely alined slots 18 adapted to receive the transverse bar 14 when the seat is swung laterally on the rod 12 to normal or horizontal position. Disposed between the cars 16 and secured in any suitable manner to the bottom of the seat 9, is a locking member 19 preferably in the form of a spring bar, the lower end of which is offset to produce a catch 20 adapted to engage the lower longitudinal edge of the transverse bar 14, thus to lock the seat 9 in position on the supporting stand.
Pivotally mounted at 21 between the side bars of the rear frame, is a foot rest including spaced bars 22 having their forward ends connected by a transverse bar 23. In the lowermost and operative position of the foot rest, the bars 22 have notches 24 engaging the front rung upon which said bars 22 rest, whereby so long as the foot rest is in such operative position, it will serve to hold the frames and prevent any accidental movement thereof.
It will be noted that the rear ends of the ears 16 are curved or rounded, as at 25 so that when the stool is folded, the ears will clear the cross bar 14 and thus permit the seat 9 to be swung downwardly to the position shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing.
The side bars comprising the front and rear frames are spaced apart by rungs which afford a yieldable support or surface.
are composed of transverse rods 26 prefersetting up the stool for use, the lower ends of the front and rear frames are partially. separated, after which the seat 9 is swung downwardly, thus causing the slots 18 to receive the cross bar 14, and the catch or looking member 19 to engage the lower end of said cross bar. A downward pressure is then exerted on the transverse bar 23 of the i foot rest, which causes the bars 22 to swing downwardly and engage with the front rung 29 so as to hold the several parts rigidly in an operative position, as will be readily understood.
In order to fold the stool for transporta-. tion or storage, a lateral pull is exerted on the locking member 19 which detaches said locking member from the transverse bar 14, thus permitting the seat to be swung up w wardly and the front and rear frames to be 1 folded one upon the other, after which the seat 9 is swung downwardly to the position shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing.
It will here be noted that when the seat is folded, the lower ends of the front and rear frames are prevented from spreading,
inasmuch as the upper ends of the bars 5' bear against the bracket 10 and serve to prevent pivotal movement of said frames.
The stools may be made in different sizes 1 and shapes and constructed of wood or other material without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A folding stool including pivotally united frames, a bracket pivotally mounted on one of the frames, a seat secured to and movable with the bracket, and a locking member depending from the free end of the seat and adapted to engage the other frame for holding said seat in operative position, said bracket being adapted to embrace the lock engaging frame for preventing spreading of the lower ends of said frames when the seat is swung downwardly to inoperative position.
2. A folding stool including pivotally connected frames, a substantially U -shaped bracket pivotally connected with the upper portion of one of the frames, a seat secured to and movable with the bracket, a transverse bar carried by the upper end of the other frame, spaced ears depending from the bottom of the seat and having their forward ends provided with recesses and their rear ends curved upwardly, and a locking member depending from the bottom of said" seat and adapted to engage thelower edge of the transverse bar for supporting the seat in operative position, said bracket being adapted to embrace the upper portion of the bar carrying frame for preventing spreading of the lower ends of said frames when the seat is swung downwardly to inoperative. position.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature'in presence of two witnesses.
