tneooea JOHN T. HALL, OF IHOPKINSVILLE, KENTUCKY.
FOLDING CHAIR.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 24;, 1909.
Application filed. October 9, 1908. Serial No. 456,976.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN T. HALL, citizen of the United States, residing at Hopkinsvllle, in the county of Christian and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to folding chairs, and has for its object to provide an improved folding chair which can be readily and cheaply constructed and which can be folded to occupy small space which makes it convenient for storage and transportation. The chair is provided with arm rests which can also be folded to a position parallel to the body. of the chair.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the chair; Fig. 2 is a side elevation; Fig. 3 is a side ele vation in folded position.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 6 indicates two side bars or pieces which form the front legs and the supports for the back, the latter being formed by slats 7 secured to upper and lower cross bars 8 and 9 which connect the side bars. The seat comprises slats 1O fastened to the front ends of side bars 11 which are pivotally mounted by a round 12 between the side bars 6, the rear ends of the bars 11 projecting at the back where they are provided with a series of notches 18. The seat frame so constructed may be set at an angle to the back frame, or swung to substantial parallelism therewith. The rear legs 14 are pivoted by the lower round 9 to the back bars 6, and said legs are connected by rounds 15 and 16 the former of which is adapted to engage in the notches 13 in the side bars 11, whereby the legs are prevented from spreading and the seat is held in position. A lower round 17 connects the lower ends of the side bars 6 for the sake of strength. The pivotal connection of the rear legs 14 allows them when disengaged to be swung up beside the back of the chair, the
The chair is provided with arm rests each of which consists of an arm piece 19 fastened to the top of a bar 20 which is pivoted at its rear end, at 21, to the rear leg 14: and which is connected by a brace 22 to the front leg 6, the brace being pivotally connected at both ends to the parts mentioned, the brace being located in the same plane as the rear leg so that when the arm rest is folded the brace will swing within the bar 20, that is, between said bar and the frame 6. The length of the brace 22 added to the distance from its pivot 23 to the pivot 21 is equal to the distance from the pivot 2 1 to the pivot 9 added to the distance from the pivot 9 to the pivot 21, so that the brace, the bar 20 of the arm rest, the rear leg, and the back bar 6, will all be substantially parallel when the parts are folded.
hen the chair is set up the back may be inclined as desired by engaging the round 15 in the appropriate notches 13. To fold the chair said round is disengaged and the rear legs 14 are swung back and up against the back of the chair, and by the same action the arm rests swing to folded position, as shown and the seat swings down to position between the lower ends of the main bars 6.
The invention is not limited to the exact embodiment shown and described nor otherwise than is indicated in the following claims.
I claim: a
1. A folding chair having a back frame, and rear legs pivoted at their upper ends thereto, and an arm rest comprising a bar pivoted to a rear leg below its said pivotal connection to the back frame,'and a brace pivotally connected to the bar and the side of the back frame.
2. A folding chair having a back frame with side pieces, and rear legs pivoted at their upper ends to said side pieces and an arm rest. comprising a bar pivoted at its rear end to a rear leg below the pivot of the latter, and a brace pivoted at its upper end to the said bar intermediate its ends, and pivoted at its lower end to the side piece of the back below the pivot of the rear leg.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN T. HALL.
