301m B. TERVILLIGER, or MILwAuKEn wIscoNsm.
To all whom it may concern v e Be it known that I, JOHN B. TERVILLIGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Chairs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a folding chair.
An object of the invention resides in the provision of achair which, when folded, will occupy an exceedingly small space and which, when unfolded, will be roomy and comfortable.
A further object resides in constructmg the chair in such manner that the several parts will be automatically folded upon one manual operation of the user.
I attain the first object by arranging the several parts of the chair in such manner that, when the chair is folded, they Wlll lie in substantially the same plane.
I attain the second object by so connecting the several parts of the chair together that upon the movement of one of the parts the remaining parts will also be moved.
With these main and other incidental objects in view such as will appear as the description progresses, my lnventlon cornprises the combination and arrangement of parts as set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
Referring to the drawing: Figure 1 1s a side elevation of the chair constructed in accordance with my invention, unfolded. Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the chair folded. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the chair folded. Fig. 5 is a fragmental detail, showing the manner of connecting the arms to the connecting links between the arms and. the rearwardlv extending legs. Fig. 6 1s a fragmental detail, showing the manner of mounting the seat upon the main side bars.
Referring to the drawing wherein like parts are indicated by. like characters throughout the several views: the embodiment of the invention illustrated comprises a pair of spaced standards 1 which are secured together by cross bars 2, the said cross bars being in spaced relation and connected by a suitable member 3. The cross bars 2 and the member 3 form the back of :IQ DIN ZCH IR.

' Application filed January 5, 1915. Serial No. 622,
ards 1 form two of the legs of the chair. The remaining legs 4 and 5 are held in spaced relation by rungs 6, 7 and 8. the distance between the outer faces of the legs 4 and 5 being slightly less than the distance between the inner faces of the legs formed by the standards 1. Therung 7 is extended beyond the legs 4 and 5 and through the legs formed by the standards 1, which legs will be hereinafter designated by the reference character 9. The distance between the pivotal points of the legs 4, 5 and 9 andthe ends of the legs 9 is less than the distance between'the said pivotal point and the ends of the legs 4 and 5 for apurpose which will hereinafter become apparent. Pivotally mounted on the rung 6 is a seat 10, preferably rectangular in formation, which has grooves 11 in the side edges thereof, in which groovespins l2 ride, the said pins being secured and extending inwardly from the standards 1.
Pivotally secured on a transversely extending rod 13 and on the outer faces of the standards 1 are arms 14, which arms rest, when the chair is unfolded, on the upper ends of rods 15, which form connecting links 1 between the legs 4 and 5 and the said arms 14. These rods are provided with longitudinally extending slots 16 through which pins 17 on the legs 9 extend and by means of which the said rods 15 are slidably and pivotallv secured to the outer faces of the legs 9. These rods 15 are. at their lower ends, pivotally secured on the outer faces of the legs 4 and 5 at the lower ends thereof. These rods are pivoted on the lower rung e which is extended beyond the outer faces of the legs 4 and 5 and thus spaces, slightly greater than the thickness of the legs 9 are provided, for the accommodation of the said legs when the chair is folded. The upper ends of the rods 15 have pivotally secured to the inner faces thereof links 17 which extend rearwardly of and are secured to the arms 14.
When the chair is folded the arms 14 extend upwardly from their pivots in alinement with the standards 1, the rods 15 lie parallel with the standards and in contact therewith. This relation of the arms 14 and the rods 15 is permitted by the connection 17 between the rods and arms and because of the fact that the said rods 15 are slidably mounted on the standards 1. At this time the chair, while the lower parts of the standthe legs 9 lie in alinement with and between the rods 15 and the legs 4 and 5, while the seat 10 lies between the standards 1 in substantially the plane thereof, rests against the back of the chair and is held in place by the rungs 6 and 7. This location of the wardly. the rear end thereof will ride down wardly on the said pins.
.It will thus be seen that I have provided a chair which may be folded so that the parts thereof will lie in substantially the same plane and one wherein but one manual operation will be necessary to accomplish the complete folding of the chair.
While I have illustrated and described a particular embodiment of my invention, I have merely done so for the sake of convenience and I do not wish to belimited to that particular embodiment as it is obvious that numerous changes may be made in the details of construction thereof without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention or exceeding the scope of the appended claims. 1
What I claim is t 1. In a folding chair, the combination with spaced standards, of a back extending between and secured to the upper portions of said standards, legs pivotally connected to the lower portions of the standards, arms pivotally connected to the standards between the pivotal points of the legs and the upper ends thereof, rods pivotally and slidably mounted on the lower portions of the standards and pivotally connected to the lower ends of the legs, links pivoted to the upper ends of the rods, extending rearwardly and connected tothe said arms and a seat hingedly connected on the upper ends of the legs and slidably supported on the standards. a
2. In a folding chair, the combination -with a pair ofstandards, the lower ends thereof forming the legs, of legs pivotally mounted on the standards adjacent the lower portions thereof, arms pivotally mounted on the standards above the said pivotal points of the legs, rods slidably and pivotally mounted on the standards and connected to the arms and the lower ends of the legs and a seat hingedly connected to the upper ends of the legs and slidably supported on the said standards; 7
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
