Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
ANNIE VOGEL, OF NEV YORK, N. Y., AND FANN IE KREBS, OF GEORGTOVVN, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAIR-CURLING PINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent Np. 102,338, dated April 26, 1870.
To @ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that we, ANNIE VOGEL, of New York city, and FANNIE KREBs, of Georgetown, in the District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hair-Curling Pins, of which the'following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of our invention is to cause the hair to curl by crimping or confining it by a proper instrument; and our improvement consists in constructing a curling-pin with prongs to penetrate the hair, a shield or sheath to cover the points of the prongs and protect the wearer, and a cord to retain the shield in place.
In the accompanying drawings, which make part of this specification, Figure l represents a view of our pin inserted in the hair; Fig. 2, a View of the pin with the sheath on the prongs; Fig. 3, a view of the same with the sheath removed from the prongs; Fig. 4, views of sheaths of different forms. Figs. 5 and'6 show modifications of our invention.
In Figs. 1, 2, and 3 the pin A is shown as made with a loop, a, at its head to receive the cord c, which holds the sheath b, which consists of a plate furnished with eyes or sockets to iit the prongs of the pin.
In Figs. 5 and Gwe have shown a method of adapting our improvement to ordinary hairpins by securing a plate, e, to the head of the pin instead of forming the loop in the wire itself, as shown in Figi'. 1, 2, and 3.
Other modifications of the form of this device would readily suggest themselves to skillful mechanics after examining our invention.
In applying our invention the hair is rolled in a spiral form, as shown in Fig. l, and the pin inserted through the central portion of the hair which is not rolled. The sheath is then placed on the prongs, the cord coming outside of the hair.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination ofthe forked pin,the sheath, and the elastic connecting-cord, the whole constructed for joint operation substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto subscribed our names.
A. VOGEL.
