Letters Patent No. 102,337, dated Apr/il 26, 1870.

IMPROVED SPRING BED-BOTTOM.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.

To all whom tt may concern:

Be it known that we, MATTHEW V AN VLECK and LAWRENCE VAN VLEcK, of Monroe, in the countyV of Green and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bed-Springs and Fasteners; and do hereby declare that the followin we have set forth the nature and principles of our said improvement, by which our invent-ion may he distnguished from others of a similar class, together With such parts as we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent.

Oui` improvement relates to that class of spring bed-bottoms in which coiled spiral springs are made use of and The nature of our invention consists in certain Inodications in the details of the same by means of which double springs are connected together by metallic bands made to react upon each other, in such a manner as to cause the bed-bottom to maintain a homogeneous and level position, and in providing a slotted bar by means of which the said bottom may be widened to suit any width of bedstead.

In the accompanying plate of drawings which illustrate our invention and form a part of the specifica tioni Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bed-bottom, with our invention applied thereto.

Upon the top rails A of the bed-bottom is arranged a series of double springs, B. Said springs neoted, and, being coiled in opposite directions, react upon each other. One series of the loops O joins the connecting wires of the said double springs, and another series E joins the upper spiral curves of the said springs, as represented in the figure. Still another series F connects the upper spiral curves of the springs with the head and foot-rails.

The springs are secured to the rails by means of plug-fastenings or otherwise. The forces of tension thus cause the hed-bottom to assume at all times a level position.

The extension-bars H. are each provided with three or more circular perforations or slots, through either of which the screw-bolt I, secured by a nut under 1he bed-bottom to any width of bedstead.

Having thus described our invention, We claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent The arrangement of the double light-handed and left-handed springs B, connected by the loops C, E, and l, the top and side rails, and the bars H, provided each with three or more circular perforations, when constructed to operate together as described.
