FOLDING EXTENSION-BED.

Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed April 4, 1911. Serial No. 618,980.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EMMY Rosa NEU- KIRCH, a subject of the King of Denmark, residing at Newry Road, Claremont, near Cape Town, Province of the Cape of Good Hope, Union of South Africa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Folding Extension-Beds, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to sleeping beds,

cots or the like, more especially those used for children, and is constructed with the object of dispensing with the spring, mattress, undersheet, oilcloth and flannel usually connected with childrens beds or cots, thus affording facilities for keeping the beds clean and dry and making a complete and thorough disinfection possible. The beds are therefore of a highly hygienic nature, moreover being collapsible they are therefore portable.

Now in order to more fully describe my invention reference is made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bed or a cot. Fig. 2 is a plan, and Fig. 3 is a plan of the bed folded up.

The four corners of the bed comprise two pillars a, b, 0, d, e, f, g, h, joined together with hinges i, Z, m, n. The hinges of each two diagonal corners are arranged on the outside 2' and Z and inside m and n of the pillars a, b, e, f and 0, cl, 9, h, respectively, an arrangement which permits the folding of the bed. Each end of the bed consist-s of narrow laths 0 and 0 secured at convenient intervals to the inside corner pillars a, 0, e and g. The sides of the bed also consist of laths r, r, s and s secured at intervals to the outer face of the corner pillars b, d, f and 72.. These side laths only extend slightly more than half the length of the bed and are secured to subsidiary pillars t, a, 'w and w located midway between thev corner pillars on each side. The laths r and 1" secured to the left hand corner pil-' lars b and it are secured to the subsidiary pillars u and a2 nearest to the right hand corner pillars d and f and the laths s and s secured to the subsidiary pillars 2i and w in such a manner that the side laths s and 8 attached to the right hand corner pillars are capable of sliding between the laths 1" and 1" attached to the left hand corner pillars, or vice versa as may be desired, when the ends of the bed are pressed inward or outward. This arrangement permits of the bed being extended or otherwise at will.

Through each outer corner pillar b, d, f and h a hole is provided through which two rollers 0" and d pass. These rollers extend slightly beyond the ends of the bed. At one end of the bed a peg e and f is placed through each roller to keep them in position. At the other end of the bed and passing through a hole provided near the end. of each roller is a smaller roller 9 which keeps the larger rollers c and cl from passing through the holes in the corner pillars and also prevents them from turning.

A piece of mattress ticking or other suitable flexible material h of suitable length and width is sewn together laterally in the manner of a roller towel. It is drawn over the rollers c and d after they have been pushed through the holes in one end of the bed, the rollers are then placed through the holes in the other end of the bed and the pegs e and f and small roller 9 are placed in their respective positions.

It is obvious that the rollers o and d may be provided on one end with a knob which will dispense with the necessity for pegs e and f and it is also obvious that the rollers and ticking may be made to fit in the bed frame crosswise instead of lengthwise.

It will be observed that the positions of the ticking can be changed from time to time as occasion arises by simply removing the small end roller 9 and rotating the rollers 0 and 0? one way or the other as the ticking rotates with the rollers. This is especially convenient for childrens cots, where the ticking is being continually dampened, as a dry surface can always be obtained. The ticking can be easily removed altogether and washed, another one being substituted in the meantime. If the climate is cold a cotton sack, bag or case, similar to a pillow case, stuffed with chalf sawdust or the like convenient stufiing can be inserted between the ticking. The contents of the case can be destroyed when so desired and the case can be washed and used again.

In order to fold up the bed the ticking h is removed from the roller 0 or d, said roller being subsequently replaced in its former position-the small end roller 9 having been first removed. The staples a and b on the subsidiary pillars t, u, w, a? must be unfastened and the ends of the bed pressed together. This will shorten the bed and by pressing the sides together the bed becomes quite flat. To keep the bed in this position the small end roller 9 should be placed through the holes 6 and m provided near the tops of the tWo inner diagonal pillars a and 6. This serves as a handle by which the bed can be carried.

I do not bind myself to use laths for the ends and sides of the bed, as it will be readily understood that cane or such like material can be used With the same eifect.

Claims:

1. A bed comprising in combination, four corner posts, the opposite pairs of Which are provided with apertures in alinement With each other, oppositely disposed side structures secured to said posts, complemental side structures pivoted to said posts Whereby the said side structures may be folded with respect to said first mentioned side structure, a rod for each of said pairs of corner posts and adapted to extend through the said apertures therein, and a member adapted to be rigidly held cross-Wise by said rods to retain said side structures in a substantially rectangular form. V

In a bed provided With sides forming substantially a rectangular form, of means pivoting said sides at the corners thereof whereby the same may be folded, and means retaining said bed in a substantially rectangular form, said means including rods carried by two of the parallel sides thereof, and a member adapted to be rigidly held cross- Wise by said rods.
