Be it known that I, ALGERNON R. LYON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nardin, in the county of Kay and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Locking Whips in Sockets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the lttters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in means for holding whips in sockets and consists of a simple and efficient device of this nature, comprising a plate which .is fastened to the rim of the opening about the socket and to which a lock is rigidly fastened, having a tongue movable upon the plate and which is adapted to partially surround and frictionally bind and hold the butt end of the whip.

The invention consists of various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and then specifically defined in the appended claim.

I illustrate my invention in the accom panying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the application of my invention to a whip socket, and Fig. 2 is a top plan view.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a whip socket of ordinary construction adapted to be fastened to the dash board of a carriage and to the upper end of the socket is secured an apertured plate B which has a circular-outlined flange D fitting over the top of the socket. Said plate extends laterally from the socket, and E is a padlock which is rigidly fastened thereto or integral with the plate and is provided with a tongue F having a semi-circular outlined portion adapted, when the tongue is in a locked relation within the casing of the pad lock, to bind against the butt end 0 of a whip and hold the same against the concaved marginal edge of the opening in the plate also against the marginal edge of a concaved re cess formed in the end of the casing of the padlock. A stop T is formed upon said plate and is adapted to limit the movtment of the shackle in one direction.

The operation of the device will be readily understood and is as follows: Vhen the lock is in an open relation, the tongue will be thrown out by the spring of the lock to its limit and against said stop, thus allowing the butt of a whip to be inserted in the socket, after which the tongue may be pushed into the casing and the lock and frictionally engaging the butt of the whip to hold the same securely in place without rattling.

What I claim to be new is A device for holding whips in sockets comprising, in combination with a whip socket, a plate provided with an integral flange fitting over said socket and an opening for the reception of the butt end of a whip, said plate having a lateral extension which is flush with the face of the plate, a lock casing fixed to said projection, said' casing having a pivotal tongue at its end provided with a concaved recess which is flush with the marginal edge of the open ing in said plate, a stop projecting from the latter and adapted to limit the swinging movement of the tongue, as set forth.
