To all whom it may concern:
MA'r'rnn-is J. SKUBii, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pueblo, in the county of Pueblo and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Stakes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved folding flat car stake.
The object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed and efficient stake for fat cars which may be readily placed. on cars now in use or on cars in the process of construction.
Another object of the invention is to provide a car stake which when not in use may be readily folded down out of the way extending parallel to the bottom of the car and be locked in both operative and inoperative positions.
Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 represents a side elevation of this improved stake arranged in operative position; Fig. 2 is a similar view with the stake in inoperative position; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the stake proper detached.
In the embodiment illustrated, a suitable base plate 1 is shown provided with apertures for securing it to the car body at any desired point by means of screws or any other desired fastening devices. This plate 1 is provided with an enlarged central aperture having an annular seat 2 arranged around one face thereof to receive a revolv ing disk 3 with which a stake 1 is detachably connected as will hereinafter be described.
The base plate 1 is provided on its outer face at diametrically opposite points with plate springs 5 and 6 adapted for engagement with the inner face of the stake t when swung into operative position to hold said stake securely against rattling. A keeper plate 13 is arranged over the bolt 11 and is slotted longitudinally at 14 toprovide for the extension therethrough of an operating button or lug 15 connected with the bolt 11 and by means of which said bolt may be retracted against the tension of its spring when it is desired to change the position of the revoluble plate 3.
The plate 3 is provided on its outer face with a laterally projecting boss 16' extending across the width of said plate and having a longitudinally extending dove-tailed groove 16 arranged therein, said groove being preferably tapered toward one end and designed to receive the side flanges 17 'of the stake 4:, said stake being also preferably tapered to fit within the groove 16. The boss 16 is provided on its outer face with oppositely disposed recesses 18 and 19 arranged in alinement to receive the opposite ends of a locking pin 20 which eX- tends transversely through the stake 4 and which is designed to lock said stake against longitudinal movement in the groove. As shown in Fig. 1 this stake at when applied projects at opposite ends beyond the edges of the opening in the plate 1, the lower end of the stake extending sufficiently to engage the spring 5 and stop 8 when swung into upright position, in which position it is locked by the bolt 11 engaging the recess 10.
When the stake is not desired for use, the bolt 11 is released from the recess 10 and the stake is swung into a plane at right angles to the position which it occupies when in operative position with its lower end engaging the stop 9 and the bolt 11 will then engage the recess 12 and lock said stake in lowered position out of the way.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined in the appended claims.
Vhat I claim as my invention 1. A flat car stake comprising a base plate, a disk revolubly mounted thereon and provided with a spring pressed locking bolt projecting normally beyond one edge thereof, and a stake detachably mounted on said disk, said base plate having recesses adapted to be engaged by said bolt for locking said stake in operative or inoperative position.
2. A flat car stake comprising a base plate having an aperture therein, an annular seat arranged around said aperture, a disk revolubly mounted in said seat, a boss extending transversely across the outer face of said disk and provided with a dovetailed groove extending longitudinally thereof, a
stake having side flanges for engagement with said groove, means for holding said stake against longitudinal movement and means for locking said disk in adjusted position to hold said stake in upright or lowered positions.
3. A flat car stake comprising a base plate, a disk revolubly mounted thereon, means for locking said disk in adjusted position, a boss on the outer face of said disk provided with a dove-tailed groove therein, said boss having oppositely disposed recesses on its outer face, a stake having flanges for slidable engagement with said groove, and a locking pin extending transversely through said stake and adapted to be engaged with said recesses for locking said stake against longitudinal movement.
