Description
@wat @Mira L. OTTMAR FRANKE, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
Letters' Patent No. 102,244, dated .April 26, 1870.
RAINBOW SPIN NIN GTOP.
The Schedule referred to in these Letten Patent and making part of the same To all whom it may concern Be it known thatI, L. OTTMAR F11-ANKE, of the city and county of Baltimore and State of Maryland,
have invented a Rainbow Spinning-Top; and I do.-
hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and
-exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the top with the wings closed;
Figure 2 is a planview of the same with the wings expanded; andl l Figure 3 is a detached view of. a colored card that may be placed on the top when in motion, in order to vary the hue.
This invention consists in the combination of a iop with wings, so arranged that, when the top is in a state'of rest, the wings are folded by means of springs against the shaft of the top, and, when the top is set whirling, the wings are expanded by centrifugal force, and, being tinted on their upper surfaces with' varionsbrilliant hues, present a pleasing appearance of as many different `rings around the top as there are colors on the wings, which rings seem t0 be successively absorbed in the top, owing to the gradual drawing .of the wings toward the center by the springs, as the centrifugal force decreases.
In the 'drawings- Ais the top-spindle.
a and b are disks, placed on the spindle, one above the other, with an interval of one-fourth of an inch, moreor less, between them.
The top of the upper disk may be painted in any desired combination of tints.
Near the margin of the lower disk are vertical pins,...
c c, placed at opposite sides of the spindle, and, on
each of thesel pins, is pivoted awing, d, which, whenl the top is in a state of rest, is drawn against the spindle by a spring, O. v
, When the top is rotating the -wings fly out from between the disks, and present the appearance above described. Y l
As the speed of the top decreases, the springs gradually withdraw the wings from observation between the disks, and thus contract the apparent size of the colored rings.
Pasteboard cards h, each provided with4 a hole for the spindle to pass through, and tinted in different hues, may be dropped on the upper disk during its rotation in order to change the color.
This toy is specially attractive by reason of its brilliant appearance, and the apparent changes of forni it undergoes during rotation.
Having thus described my invention,
What l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A top provided with one or more disks, a l), and combined with wings d, substantially in the manner described.
L. OTTMAR FRANKE.
