JOHN A. MINOR, OF MIDDLETOWN, CONNECTICUT.
Letters Patent No. 77,072, dated April 21, 1868.
. ILLUSION TOY.
digs snout numb in in flgm 32mm 33mm admitting gm tilts time.
TO ALL WHOM ITMAY CONCERN Be it known that I, JOHN A. MINOR, of Middletown, in the county of Middlescx, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Illusion Toy; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, a side view,
Figure 2 the same view with the wheel turned one quarter around, and in Figure 3 the same viewas it appears when in motion.
This invention is designed, by the rapid revolution of a single figure, to, cause it to appear like two distinct and well-defined figures, and consists in placing a figure upon a balance-wheel or plate, two sides of which are of difl'erent colors, and arranging the said wheel so that it may be rapidly revolved, causing the appearance'of ,two figures upon opposite sides of the wheel, one of the color ofonc side, and the other the color of the other side.
In order to the better understanding of my invention, I will proceed to describe the same, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
' A is a metal wheel or circular plate, fixed to a spindle, B, and the said spindle supported in bearings, O, the said bearings being formed upon a handle, D, and a cord, E, wound upon the spindle B,so that by taking the handle D in one hand, and pulling the cord quickly, the wheel A will be caused to revolve, and will, when the cord is removed, by its momentum, rewind the cord on to the spindle, ready for a second pull.
Upon the upper side, and near the 'edge of the wheel A, I fix a figure, F, of any description, and I make the two sides of the said figure of different colors, say one side blue, as seen infig. 1, and the other side red, as seen in fig. 2, or any other color. When the wheel is caused to revolve, as before described, the single figure, rapidly revolving, shows to the eye, at the same time, the two sides of the single figurein opposite directions, as seen in fig. 3. p a
The illusion may be varied by fixing the figure upon a pivot on the wheel, as, for instance, if, when the wheel and figure are rapidly revolving, the finger be raised, so as to barely touch the figure as it revolves, it will be-turned upon its own pivot, and have the appearance of quickly changing places, that is, the two figures jumping from oneside to the other. Other illusions may be produced in similar manner.
Having therefore thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v The toy, constructed substantially as'herein set forth, so as to produce the illusion as described.
