To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTTO Gr. REI-IOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at 3225 West Twenty-sixth street, in Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spinning-Tops, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in spinning tops and one of the objects of the invention is to provide a top with movable parts within it which are differently colored and designed to shift their relative positions during the spinning of the top so that by the blending together of the colors of these parts in the spinning, dilferent color combinations will be formed for the amusement and instruction of children and others.
A top embodying the principles of this invention comprises in general a suitable frame in which are arranged the variously colored parts, these latter being movable with respect to each other and with respect to the frame of the top, and a centrifugal governor device engaging with the movable parts and designed by its movement in the changing speeds of the top to alter the relative positions of the colored parts and correspondingly alter the color combinations.
A top embodying the principles of this invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:

but showing the movable parts in an altered position. Fig. 4 is a chord section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary horizontal section through the device. Fig. 6 is a radial section taken on the line 66 of Fig. 1.
As shown in said drawings the solid part of the top is made in the form of a generally spherical or spheroidal cage comprising six curved ribs 10, 10 which are joined together at their ends along a common vertical axis or spindle 11. These ribs are spaced equally apart in the form of meridians and are connected by an equatorial ring 12 to which is also fixed a heavier rim 13 acting as a fly wheel for the top. The upper ends of the six connected ribs are fixed to a spool or drum 16; and on the projecting end of the spindle 11 above this spo l. there i i l nale a handle 17, so that by winding a string about the spool 16 and holding the top by the handle 17, the top may be spun in a manner familiar to all.
In addition to the six fixed ribs 10 there are also provided, in alternate relation with these six ribs, six other ribs 20, 20 which are connected together and symmetrically arranged about the axis 11 and designed to rotate about this axis through the are defined by the angle between two of the fixed ribs 10; and between the respective fixed and movable ribs there is placed a third set of ribs 25, 25, respectively, which are similarly connected together and symmetrically arranged about the axis 11 and designed to rotate about this axis with respect to the fixed ribs 10 and also with respect to the first set of movable ribs 20. The ribs 20 are all joined to a circular disk 30, such disk being formed with radial extensions'Sl in which are cut notches which are sprung into engagement with corresponding notches in the inner edges of the ribs 20 so that by means of the disk 30 the six ribs20 are fixed together and may be caused to rotate about the axis 11 by the rotative movement of this disk, as will be hereinafter described. Similarly the second set of movable ribs is joined to a circular disk 35;and immediately be low these two disks is placed a third disk 40 which is joined to the fixed ribs 10. The three disks are made with large openings in their centers so as not to interfere with the other parts of the mechanism to be hereinafter described.
Below the threecircular disks there is a fixed collar 43 on the spindle 11, this collar being provided with radial extensions or ears 44 to which are pivoted governor arms 45, 45 having weights at their outer ends and connected through links 46, 46 with a tube or sleeve 50.upon thespindle 11. is free to slide up and down on the spindle and is slotted as indicated at 51 to accommo- This sleeve I the slot and correspondingly alter the position of the disk 30. Similarly a correspond ing slot 63 (Fig. 1) is cut inthe wall of the tube diametrically opposite to the slot and is similarly engaged by a pin 62 projecting from an inwardly extending radial arm (34 made integral with the disk Each of the slots 60 and 63 is shaped to provide a straight portion and a spiral portion, and the slots are so arranged relatively to each other that in the first part of the travel of the sleeve either from its lowest position upward or from its highest position down ward, one disk will be rotated through ap proximately 60 degrees while the pin connected to the other disk rides in a straight part of its slot and holds the disk fixed; and thence the latter will enter the spiral part of its groove to rotate the second disk while the first pin rides in a straight part of its groove or slot to hold the first disk stationary and allow the second one to overtake it.
Between the fixed ribs 10 and the first described set of mmrable ribs 520 there are pasted thin pieces of colored paper indicated here diagrammatically merely at 70, which are oined to the two ribs and to each other in a cellular or bellows-like arrangement which is well known in the art, so that in the relative movement of these two ribs the connecting paper may be folded together into a small space or expanded to fill the largest angles made between the ribs. Similarly between the respective ribs 10 and the respective ribs 25 there is a paper filling 73 which is preferably of a different color from the other; and between the respective ribs 20 and 25 is another paper filling 74 which may be preferably of a different color still. In the operation of the device it is designed that when the top is first spun the governor weights will fly out to their highest position and move the sleeve 50 upward; and this movement of the sleeve is designed to actuate the two disks 80 and 35 so that first the set of movable ribs 20 will be moved in a clockwise direction (Fig.1) to compress the paper filling 7 O and expand the paper filling 74, (as illustrated in Fig. 3 where one of the ribs 20 is shown displaced through a movement of approximately 30 degrees) and after the ribs 20 have reached the limit of their movement it is designed that the second set of ribs 25 shall be moved in the same direction to compress the paper fillings 74 and expand the paper fillings 7 3 and provide another color combination. Thereafter, as the top loses speed the governor weights will slowly fall and reverse the movements of the sliding sleeve and the disks just described.
I claim as my invention:
1.'In a spinning top, the combination with a fixed frame, of a part movable circumferentially with respect thereto and a centrifugally actuated part engaging therewith to impart movement thereto.
2. In a spinning top, a circumferentially movable and centrifugally actuated part designed to vary its circumferential position with changes in speed of such top.
3. In a spinning top, the combination with a fixed frame, of circumferentially movable parts of different colors, and a centrifugally actuated part adapted to impart movement to such circumferentially movable parts.
4. A spinning top comprising a spindle and circumferentially arranged parts in fixed relation thereto, other parts in circum ferentially movable relation thereto, and centrifugally actuated means for imparting movement to such movable parts. 7
5. A spinning top comprising a fixed frame designed to spin about a vertical axis, circumferentially movable parts within such frame, and a centrifugal governor connected to such circumferentially movable parts.
6. In a spinning top, the combination of a fixed frame, a spindle through such frame, movable ribs rotatively arranged around such spindle, colored connecting parts between such movable ribs and the parts of such frame, and a centrifugal governor connected to such movable ribs and adapted to impart movement thereto.
7. A spinning top comprising a fixed frame in the form of curved ribs symmet rically arranged about a vertical spindle, a set of movable ribs in alternate relation to the fixed ribs, an expansible filling connecting adjacent pairs of fixed and movable ribs, a ring connecting the movable ribs, a centrifugal governor, and means for imparting movement from such governor to such connecting ring.
