Tol altfwm 'it may concerns, Y
Be it known that I, ERNEST W. DAVIS, a
Chi-
Illin'ois, have linvented e certain new and useful? Improvement in; Moving-Picture Toys, of which the following is u, full, clear,
concise, and exact description. My inventionrelatesl to a toy for producing moving pictures or similar effects due to the persistencefof visuel impressions. Its object is to vprovides toy which is of simple construction,"Whichl can be manufactured-,at
'a low cost, Which can be packed Within small compass, `and Which can be readily `assem- My 'invention ctunprises rotary shutter ordisk provided with one or moreslits, and a movable band havingv pictures or other representations' thereon which, `during the rotation of seid shutter, areceused to move successively; into( position.|` to Vhe viewed through the 'slits 1n, saidshutter. ln its preferred embodiment -my .invention` comprises; more' specifically, a3 rotatable, horizontli'shaft upon onee'nd ,of lwhich l is de'- techeloly secured e. disk havngoneor more radial slitsend'upon the oth'e'rendof which is secured?. pulley or similardevice for imparting travel `to the picture containing bendfseid band preferably beingin fthe spective .view of `the forml offsl Het ringer annulus provided with `pictures or otherfrepresentetionslupon one or both feces thereof.v j
The several `features ofmyfinvention may be morev readily .understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, Whieh'is s perof my.,invei'ition.k V
The. rotatable, horizontal shaft A. has a` diskB-mounted upon one end vthereofrto ro tatelwith said: Shaft. The disk. B 'may be madc'qof perstel'soerd or fother suitable f instel l rial, and is provided .preferably with two diemetrically opposed radialslits, Zut..` The disk B is provided lwith `a'hub Ab1 lsecured to the disk in any suitable manner, and having j opening lfor receivingthe end -ofthe sheft A, said 'shfthevingatightatfinseid open# 5o ready passemsiya of the 'altr-B81113011 the and of thesheft or for the 'pdisessenlblmg'of the ing lin the hub b1,'thereby' providing furthe Same.
.A pulley C, of wood or suitable ma teriel, is detechebly secured upon 'one end of' pr the shaft Said pulleyis preferably pre preferred V[embodiment vided'with e circmnferentialgroove c 'foifl'ref eeiving the band D.. Said groove serv/esto properly aline said band, that is to maintain a 1t 1n approximately parallel relation to the disk or shutter B. The side Walls of the4 groove c 'are preferably conical shaped, thus providing :1V-shaped' groove 'which tends to prevent the hand from yfelling 'ofV of .the
pulley. The band D is preferably in ther form of u'ut ring'or annulus adeptedtoy be placed over the pulley C and to depend, therefrom. Seid, band Dis preferably made of cardboard or other somewhat vstiff me.- terial. The-Weight of the annulusDv/ill cause the same to beer With sulllcient friction upon the pulleyV C at the pointof Contact of Y lseid annulus'with said pulley to cause the rotation of the pulley() to drive-the bend'D in the direction of rotation of thel shaft A.:
Obviously, however, some other form of drive may be substituted ,for such vfriction drive. The band-D is provided throughout-.

In the drawing the toy is shownessen;l .l
bled and ready for operation. thatthe annulus l) can readily be lifted olf of the pulley C, and reversed with respect thereto in order to show another series of1 pictures upon the other face of the aiinulus; or t-hatone `aiinulus can be quicklyV and readily substituted for another. From the preceding description it will be seen that the shaft A, disk B, pulley C,band
eyes when the figures are slightly below the level of the slits through which they are viewed. It is evident that if the annular band D were mounted concentrically' of the shaft A, the disk would have to be considerably enlarged or else the .circumferential slits b would be below the figures on the band- D. Furthermore, my inventionprovides simple means by which the band D and the figures thereon are given a relative motion with respect to the slits in the disk l5, thus enabling the operator to rapidlyrotate the disk and at the same time to impart a slower revolution to the band D, the movement of-tlie band having, however, a definite ratio to .the movement. of the slits which are provided in the disk B. I claim:
1. In a moving picture toy, the combina Ltion with a rotary shutter having one or more slits therein, of a band having a series of pictures thereon, and means for pi'oducing a movement of said band relative tosaid shutter to bring said pictures successively in the line of vision when said pictures are viewed through said slits.
2'. In' a moving picture toy, the combination with a disk having one or more slits therein, of an annular band provided with a series of pictures thereon,6 said band being eccentrically disposed with' respect to said disk, and means for im arting rotary motion to said disk .and ban 3. In a moving picture toy, the combination with a rotary shaft, of a disk mounted upon one end of said sliaftvto rotate therewith, said disk being provided with one or more slits, a band having a series of pictures thereon, and mechanism carried by said rotary shaft for imparting a motion to said band across the line of vision whenvsaid figlures are viewed through'said slits.
l 4. In a moving piet-lire toy, the combina-l tion with a horizontally disposed rotary shaft, of a 'het' mounted vupon one end of provided with one or more radial slits, and an annular band Supported -froni the oppo site end of said shaft, said hand having a l It is obvious l sai'd shaft to rotate therewith, said disk being tion with a horizontally disposed rotary v A. shaft, of a disk mounted upon one end of said shaft to rotate` therewith, said disk being provided with one or more radial slits, a pulley secured to the opposite end of said shaft, and an annular band placed over said pulley and depending therefrom, said band having a series of pictures thereon.
(5. In a moving picture toy, the combination` with a horizontally disposed 'rotary shaft, of a disk mounted upon one end of said shaft to rotate therewith, said disk being' provided with one or more radial slits, a cireuinterentially grooved pulley mounted upon the opposite end of said shaft, and an annular band supported in said groove and depending .from said pulley, said band being thereby adapted to be revolved at a comparatively slow rate of speed by the rotation 'of said shaft.
T. ln a moving picture toy, the combination willi a rotary shaft, of a handle having forks provided with bearings for said shaft,
a disk mounted on'oiie end of said shaft to rotate therewith, said disk being provided with one or more radial slits therein, a'pulley aiiixed to the other end of said shaft, and an annular band placed over said pulley and depending therefrom, said band having a series of pictures thereon.
8.'In a moving picture toy, t-lie combination 1with a rotary disk having one or more slits therein, of an annular band having a series of pictures thereon,"and means for ro tating said disk and revolving said band in the saine direction lat different rates of speed,
and thereby to bring saidvpictures successively in the line of the vision when Vsaid piebearings, 'a rubber tube inelosing a portion lof said shaft and providing a friction proioc ducing surface by whichfsaid shaft may be f rotated, a disk mounted yon one end of said shaft, said disk being therein, a pulley inouiite upon the otherend rovided with slitsV of said shaft, and anaiinular band depending from said pulley, said band being provided with a-seiies'ol' picture.; thereon.
