Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OLAF IVI. BYE, OF PRINCETON, MINNESOTA.
CLEVIS.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLAF M. BYE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Prineeton, in the county of Millelacs and State of Minnesota, hc ve invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clevises, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in plow clevises, and has for its principal object to provide a device of this character whereby a clevis may be quickly and easily attached to or detached from both the plow beam and the whiil'letree.
Other objects and advantages 4will be apparent from the following description, and with particular reference to the accompany drawings.
In the drawings: Figure l is a side elevation of the end portion of a plow beam showing my device applied thereto and attached to a whitlletree, the whitlletree being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the device. Fig. 4L is a section on the line ll-l of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, 10 represents the plow beam having formed vertically therethrough the usual opening 11. The clevis comprises the two members 'l2 and 13, which are flattened at approximately their central portions, inclined toward each other, crossed, and pivoted as at Ill, the adjacent ends being flattened transversely and formed with the overlapping curved hoolelike portions 15 and 1G, said portions 15 and 16 being adapted to embrace the center clip 17 of the whi'tlietree 1S and engage in a groove 19 formed therein. Formed in each of the portions 15 and 16 is an opening 20, said openings adapted to register when engaged, and a screw 21 passed through said registered openings, which are threaded, said screw having a pointed end 22 adapted to l bite into the whiftletree and hold the jaw Specification of Letters Patent.

members I5 and 16 thereto. 'The portions of the clevis at the other side of the pivot pin 14 are rounded in cross section, the end portion of the member 13 being turned upwardly at right angles 23, and adapted to pass through an opening 24C formed in the flattened portion 25 formed at the end of the member I2. Formed transversely through the upper portion of the member 25 is an opening 26 to receive a cotter pin 27. The member 23 is adapted to be Iirst inserted through the openings 1I in the plow beam from beneath, and then passed through the opening in the flattened portion 25 of the member 12, and then have inserted therethrough the cotter pin 27, at the same time the jaws l5 and 1G being engaged with the whitlletree, which securely holds the parts to the beam and to the whitlletree.
That is claimed is:
A clevis comprising a pair of members crossed and pivotally connected together, one end of each of the said members being formed with overlapped hook portions for engagement with a whitlietree, a screw passed through said hook portions and adapted to engage in the whi'flletree, the opposite end of one of said members having a portion extending at right angles thereto and provided with a transverse opening near its free end, said right angular portion being adapted to engage in an opening in a plow beam, transversely flattened portion on the relative end of the other member having an opening therethrough for the reception of said extension, and a fastening device disposed in the opening in said extension.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
