LOGGING-GRAB.
EPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 733,989, dated July 21, 1905;.
Application filed March '7, 1908. Serial Nor 146,659. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES J. MORRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gantwell, in the county of Ritchie and State of Vest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Logging-Grabs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices for hauling logs, and has for its object to provide a device of the character described in which two hooks are employed connected by a chain whose length can be regulated to suit the width of the log and a draft-link provided on said chain that can be adjusted on said chain so as to always have the pull from thecenter, and thus more efiectively hold .the hooks in the log. I
The advantages of my invention will more fully appear hereinafter and by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view of my improved grab, and Fig. 2 a plan view of link secured to one of the hooks.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the hooks employed with my invention, one of which has a metal ring 13 in the eye a, formed in the end of the hook, While the other hook has a link 0 in its eye a, which consists of an open portion 0 and a narrow neck portion 0, having its end 0 bent at right angles to the part c.
D represents the draft chain, inserted through ring B and link 0, and E rings on each end of said chain D, of sufficient diameter to not pass through said ring B and link 0.
F represents the draft-link, inserted on chain D between ring B and link 0, which has the large end f, in which the whiffletree or other draft appliance may be secured, and the narrow portion f, which is inserted over the link in chain D midway between hooks A.
As clearly shown in the drawings, the operation of my invention would be as follows: The two hooks A are inserted in opposite sidesof the log. The'chain D is then drawn through the link 0 until tight. The link of chain D which is in the link 0 is then slipped into the neck 0 and then into the angular The draft-link F is then adj usted in the center of chainD between rings B and link 0, and the log is ready to be moved.
It is obvious that, if desired, the ringE on end of chain D, inserted through ring B, may be dispensed with and chain D secured in said ring B instead, and any other device than ring E at the other end of the chain may -be employed to prevent the chain from slip ping through link 0 or such device entirely dispensed with, so that the chain may be free to move through said link without departingv from the spirit of my invention. It is also obvious that by hardening points of hooks or grabs the appliance may be used for moving stone.
'If desired, eitheror both of rings E may he brought forward and put through draft-link F and whiflletree attached by clevis thereto if a binding grip is desired, and it will also appear that ring on draft-chain may be replaced by swivel-hook, if desired, and all slack chain or portion not needed hooked or held at F to avoid dragging.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is-- 1. In a log-chain, hooks to be inserted in the log, a ring on one hook, a link on the other, a chain inserted through said ring and link, and means to adjust the length of the chain between said hooks, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a log-chain, devices for securing the log, a ring on one device, a link on the other device having a large portion and a narrow neck, and a chain inserted through said ring and link, said chain being adapted to move freely through the large part of said link and to be secured in the narrow neck portion, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a log-chain, hooks to be inserted in the log, a ring on one hook, a link on the other hook having a large portion and a narrow neck, and a chain inserted through said ring and link, said chain being adapted to move freely through the large part of said link and to be secured in the narrow neck portion, snbstantially as shown and described.
4. In a log-chain, hooksto be inserted ,in the log, a ring on one hook, a link on the other hook having a large portion and a narrow neck with its end turned at an angle, a chain inserted through said ring and link, said chain being adapted to move freely through the large part of said link while the In testimony whereof I hereto aflix my signeck portion of said link has a slotted opennature in the presence of two witnesses.
