Be it known that I, EDWIN It. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paris, in the county of Lamar and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Drafting-Pen, of which the following is a specification.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a tie member, adapted to unite the blades of a pen, to resist a separation of the blades, the tie member being movable in the blades, at a fixed angle to the blades, whereby the blades may be separated.
In the drawings,-Figure 1 shows the invention in plan; Fig. 2 is an elevation of one edge of the structure, parts being broken away; Fig. 3 is an elevation of the opposite edge of the structure from that shown in Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a detailed perspective of the tie member which unites the blades.
In the drawings, the blades of a drafting pen are shown, and denoted by the numerals 1 and 2, the blades, as usual, having a tendency to spring apart. The blade 1 is longitudinally slotted, as shown at 3, and the blade 2 is longitudinally slotted as shown at 4, the slots 3 and 4 being parallel. Located in the slots 8 and 4, is a tie member 5, having at one end, a flattened shank 6, adapted to fit against rotation in the slot 4 of the blade 2. The shank 6 terminates in a head 7 adapted to bear against the outer surface of the blade 2. The opposite end of the tie member 5 is threaded, as shown at 8, to receive a thumb nut 9, adapted to bear against the outer face of the blade 1, the threaded portion 8 of the tie member sliding freely in the slot 3 of the blade 1. The blade 1 is shouldered, as shown at 10. The screws 20 serve as pivotal connections between the blades and the handle (not shown), whereby the blades may be swung into the dotted line position shown in Fig. 1.
In operation, by rotating the nut 9, the space between the blades may be adjusted, and a separation of the blades prevented. The tie member 5 is movable in the slots 3 and 4 of the blades 1 and 2, respectively, at a fixed angle to the blades 1 and 2, longitudinally of the slots, and transversely of the length of the tie member 5, to permit a separation of the blades, it being readily discerned that when the nut 9 rides from off the shoulder 10, a separation of the blades, for the purpose of cleaning and the like, will be permitted.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. A pen embodying blades, and a tie member uniting the blades to resist a separation of the blades, the tie member being movable in the blades, at a fixed angle to the blades, to permit a separation of the blades.
2. A pen embodying longitudinally slotted blades, and a tie member located in the slots, and uniting the blades to resist a separation of the blades, the tie member being movable transversely of its length, and longitudinally of the slots, at a fixed angle to the blades, to permit a separation of the blades.
3. A pen embodying blades, one of which is provided in its outer face with a shoulder, and a tie member uniting the blades to resist a separation of the blades, the tie member being movable in the blades, at a fixed angle to the blades, to ride off the shoulder and to permit a separation of the blades.
