county, andState of New York, and'Jersey City, Hudson county, New Jersey, respectively, have invented certain new and useful I Improvements in Incandescent-Mantle Holders and Guards, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

Our invention relates to incandescent mantle holders and guards.

The main object is to provide an effective combination of parts whereby a comparatively fragile mantle may be safely packed and transported, and by which said mantle, together with its guard, may be applied to a burner tube before the protector is removed.

In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of our invention as applied to a burner tube and just before the protector case or box is removed. In this view certain parts are broken away to reveal the internal construction. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the combined mantle support and guard. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the support and guard, partly in section. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the mantle guard. Fig. 5 is a side view thereof. Fig. 6 is a side view of part of a burner tube. Fig. 7 is a view of the under side of said burner tube.

1 represents a mantle.

2 represents a mantle support, preferably of tubular form and I having an internal thread 3 which constitutes one effective means for attaching the support to a burner 7 tube.

4 represents a burner tube having a thread 5 to receive the thread of the mantle support. The upper end of the tubular portion of the mantle support is flared outwardly to form a top 7, at the edge of which is a downturned annular flange 8.

9 is a protector box arranged to fit the flange 8, whereby said mantle support practically forms a top for one end of said box. The box serves to protect the mantle during shipment, and also facilitates applying the mantle to a burner tube. The top 7 is provided with slots l01010. The mantle guard comprises preferably a plurality of thin side arms 111111, connected at their lower ends by a skeleton guard-plate 12. The upper ends of the arms 11 are hooked, as at 14l1414. The arms 11 below the hooks 14 are provided with stops 151515. I The hooked ends 14: of the arms are arranged to pass through the slots 10, so that by partially turning the mantle guard, said hooks may be caused tooverstandthe upper surface of said top.

I/Vhen the parts are arranged as shown in Fig. l (or before they are applied to the burner) it is obvious that the mantle, as well as the aforesaid guard, will be housed within the box 9. The guard, however, before the mantel is applied to the burner, is not rigidly held, but is comparatively loose in said box. The stop shoulders 15 pre vent the guard from shifting about to such a degree as to hitand injure the mantle 1. If desired, and preferably, a suitable label may be pasted over that end of the box 9 to close the central opening in the mantle support, as well as the slots therein, said label Patented Apr. 2, 1912. i

also serving to secure said mantle support transferred bodily to a position underneathv the burner tube, and then screwed into place until the hooks 14: of the guard are clamped between the top 7 and the under side of the flange 6, which latter may be roughened or knurled to better grip the hooks. When the parts are in this position, it is obvious that the mantle, together with the guard" therefor, will be rigidly held. A downward pull upon the box 9 will remove the same from the mantle support and guard, and expose the mantle for use.

The mantle support 2, its top 7 and flange 8, are preferably made from a suitable compound which will effectively withstand heat, such as molded magnesia, said compound being preferably light colored or white, so as to, in some degree at least, re-

flect downwardly the light from the mantle when the latter is incandescent.

What we claim is 1. In a device of the character-described, a mantle, a protector box therefor, a mantle support fitted to one end of said box, the mantle being in pendant relation to said support, a guard loosely mounted in said box, a portion of said guard projecting outside said mantle support, a burner and means for rigidly securing said guard to said mantle support, said. means being fixed relatively to said burner.

In a device of the character described, a mantle, a protector box therefor, a mantle support fitted to one end of said box, the mantle being in pendant relation to said support, a guard loosely mounted in said box having hooked portions overstanding the upper side of said mantle support, a burner, and means permanently fixed relatively to said burner for rigidly securing said guard to said mantle support by engaging said hooked portions.

In a device of the character described, a mantle, a protector box therefor, a tubular mantle support, the upper part of which is fitted to one end of said box, the mantle being in pendant relation to said support, a plurality of slots in said mantle support, a mantle guard loosely fitted in said box and having the parts arranged to pass through said support and to be engaged therewith.

4:. In a device of the character described,

a burner tube having a flange, a mantle support arranged to be detachably secured to said tube, a box-like mantle protector, the upper part of said mantle support being flanged outwardly and fitted to said box, a mantle guard loosely mounted within said box, the upper part of said mantle support having slots through which parts of said guard project, whereby said parts may be engaged between the top of said guard and the flange of said burner tube.

5. In a device of the character described, a mantle support arranged to be detachably secured to a burner, a mantle fixedly secured in pendant relation thereto, a protector box surrounding said mantle and detachably connected with said mantle support, a mantle guard surrounding said mantle within said box and having portions loosely engaging clamping surfaces on the upper side of said support.
