CANDLE-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 21, 1917.
Application filed. October 2, 1916, Serial No. 123,364. Renewed July 11, 1917. Serial No. 180,019.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARY M. MELVILLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sandusky, in the county of Erie, State of certain new and'useful Improvements in Candle-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in candle holders, and particularly to candle holders used for decorating houses.
One object of the present invention is to provide a device of this character which can be conveniently and safely attached to a window ledge, so that the lights from the caidles canvbe properly seen from the outsi e.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction, and which can be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low figure.
Other objects and advantages will'be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a candle holder made in accordance with my invention, and applied to a window.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 8 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents an elongated casing, which may be formed of cardboard, stifi paper, metal, or other suitable substance which or the desires or fancies thereof. In the upper portion of this casing there are formed a row of openings 11, in which are secured socket members 12, for the reception of the candles 13, which are to be ignited for the purpose of decoration .or display. Around the upper end of each socket member, which member extends a short distance above the top of the casing, is secured Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the will answer the purpose of the user,
a laterally extending horizontal and circular'flange 14. Formed transversely through the lower portion of the intermediate part of the casing is a slot 15, through which is slidably disposed a flattened bar 16, which forms the support for the casing. The rear end of this bar is bent into angular U-shape, as shown at 17, for gripping engagement with the inner edge of the window stool or ledge 18.
As clearly seen in the lower portion of Figs. 1 and 2,. the flattened bar extends transversely of the window stool or ledge, with its angular end gripping the edge of the ledge, while the casing, with the candles are disposed in close proximity to the window sash 19, whereby the candles and their light can be easily seen from the outside, and from a considerable distance. By means of the slot and bar, the casing can be moved across the ledge, toward and from the wifndow sash, as is deemed desirable and sa e.
In Figs. 1 and 2, and the upper portion of said figures, holders 21, disposed on each side of the sash fastener 22. These holders are formed similarly to the one first described, except that the bar 23 is necessarily shorter because of the narrowness of the sash rail with which it is engaged.
What is claimed is:
A candle holder comprisingan elongated box having registering slots in its side walls adjacent the lower portions thereof, a cover telescoping onto the said box and having a plurality of openings in the top thereof, candle holding socket members disposed removably in said openings, and a bar slidably disposed through the registering openings and having one end formed into an angular hook for clamping engagement with a window ledge.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
MARY M. MELVILLE.
