Description

F. HEITZMANN, MANUFACTURE OF MANIFOLD WRITING BOOKS AND PADS. APPLICATION FILED JAILla, 1910.

31mm nfoz FRITZ HEITZMANN, OF FREIBURG, GERMANY.
MANUFACTURE or MANIFOLD-WRITING BOOKS AND PADS.
Specification of, Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 2, 1912.
Application filed January 18, 1910. Serial No. 538,720.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRITZ I-IEITZMANN, a subject of the German Emperor, and residing at. Freiburg, Baden, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Manifold-Writing Books and Pads,'of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in the manufacture of manifold-writing'books and pads of that class in which thin transparent paper sheets, designed to be written upon, alternate with sheets of thicker paper, destined to receive an impression of the writing from a carbon or manifold leaf. And the object of my invention is to insure exact register when sheets furnished with lines, columns and headings or other text are employed, so that when a thin sheet is written on, the duplicate of the writing'appears precisely upon the corresponding lines, or exactly within the corresponding column, of the thicker sheet below it. Hitherto ithas been the practice in manufacturing such books and pads to print the thicker and thinner sheets separately and then bring them into register and unite them by folding and stitching, or by clips, or in other suitable manner. The disadvantage of this method is, however, that owing to the sheets being of different kinds and thicknesses of paper, they donot stretch in the same degree, wherefore when the sheets are assembled together it is very seldom that they are in true register with respect to all the ruled lines and columns, and text. Moreover the printing of the thin sheets presents diflicult-ies by reason of the flimsy nature of the paper, whence considerable waste occurs; while the work of assembling such sheets is very tedious.
In the drawings: Figure 1, is a view in perspective of a book or pad constructed in accordance with the present invention, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section thereof.
According to my invention I overcome the inconveniences referred to, and greatly simplify the entire procedure of manufacture, by printing only the thicker paper sheets with a suitable ink. Between these various thicker sheets the transparent ones are interposed in blank, unprinted condition. ,The
thus assembled sheets are united with the aid of paste, clips, or other means, for the 'sheet will obviously be in accurate register with the printed matter on the thicker sheet below. If then a carbon or manifold leaf is laid beneath a thin sheet and the latter is written upon with a lead pencil, an agate stylus, a pen, or other instrument, the copy reproduced on the thicker sheet below will manifestly appear precisely on the proper lines, or within the correct column, in exact correspondence with the original on the thin sheet.
Having thus described my invention, I declare that what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. The method of manufacturing a manifold-writing book or pad, consisting in superimposing a pile of alternating thicker paper sheets each having transferable ink printing on its face, and thinner transparent paper blanks, in permanently connecting the sheets and blanks to form a book or pad, and in submitting them to pressure while the ink is still in a transferable state, whereby the printed matter on theface of each thicker sheet is reproduced directly on the back of the superposed blank.
2. The method of manufacturing a manifoldwriting book or pad, consisting in superposing a plurality of paper sheets, each alternate sheet having transferable ink printing on its face, and the sheet above it being transparent, in permanently connecting all of said sheets to form a book or pad, and in submitting them to pressure while the ink is still in a transferable state, whereby the ink will be impressed on the transparent sheets.
3. A manifold-writing book or pad, comprising a pile of registering and alternating thick paper sheets each having printing on In testimony whereof I aflix my signature its front face, and thin paper sheets the in presence of tWo Witnesses. back face of each of which latter bears an impression of the printing on the underly- FRITZ HEITZMANN. 5 ing thick sheet, said thin sheets being t-rans- Witnesses:

thereof is visible on the front face thereof. AUGUST OOSTERMAN.
