ENVELOP-MOISTENING DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SZGZEPAN KARGMAR- CYK, a subject of the Emperor of Austria- Hungary, residing at New Bedford, in the county of Bristoland State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelop-Moistening Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to an envelop moistening device, and the primary object of my invention isto provide foldable pads for moistening the gummed or adhesively coated flaps of envelops.

Another object of this invention is to provide a moistening device that can be advantageously used in large mercantile houses for expeditiously and economically moistening envelops for sealing purposes.

A further object of this invention is to accomplish the above results by a mechanical construction that is simple, durable and easy to handle.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in a novel construction to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.

Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the moistening device; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the device folded, and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of a portion of the device.

A device in accordance with this invention comprises two rectangular boards or plates 1 and 2, having ends thereof connected by hinges 3, whereby the board '2 can be folded on the board 1. Mounted upon the boards 1 and 2 by tacks t or other fastening means are pads 5, preferably made of fabric and Copies of this patent may be obtained'for an absorbent material 6, as cotton or felt. Absorbent material is arranged between the fabric and each pad is moistened with water, whereby when the flap 7 of envelop 8 is placed upon the pad and pressed, the gummed flap will be moistened.

Connected to the outer end of the board 1 is a protecting pad or sheet 9 held in engagement with the board 1 by the same tacks 4 that hold the pad 5. The protecting pad or sheet 9 can be made of any material and the object of this pad is to prevent an envelop from being soiled when two envelops are moistened by folding the board 2 upon the board 1 or vice versa.

After envelops have been placed in position, as shown in Fig. 1, the sheet 9 can be folded upon the envelop on the board 1, and

then the board 1 folded onto the board 2 and the boards pressed together, whereby the moisture in the pads 5 will place the adhesive material of the envelop flaps in condition for sealing. This operation can be reversed, that is, the board 2 folded onto the sheet 9, as shown in Fig. 3.

What I claim is An envelop moistening device comprising rectangular boards hinged together whereby one board can be folded upon the other, a

moistening pad carried by each board, and a protecting pad connected to the end of one of said boards and adapted to be folded inwardly upon an envelop to prevent an envelop on the other board from being soiled when said boards are folded together.
