UNITED STATES PATENT "OFFICE.
MARIE A. KRUG, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
VALVE-GUARD FOR STOVES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARIE A. Knee, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Valve-Guards for Stoves, of which the following is a complete specification.
The main objects of this invention are to provide an improved construction of valve guard for stoves; to provide a guard adapted to prevent children from tampering with the valves of gas stoves; to provide a valve guard for gas stoves which is adapted to be easily attached to or detached from the stove; and to provide a cheap, simple and durable device adapted to afford easy access to the valves when desired.
A specific embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary section taken on line XX of Fig. 2, of a gas stove with a gas valve guard thereon having parts shown in elevation. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary front elevation of the stove and guard.
In the construction shown, the gas stove 1 is of the ordinary or usual type of construction, the top of which has a front downturned flange or ledge 2, beneath and to the rear of which are the burners 3. A gas supply or feed pipe 4 extends along the front of the stove, and branch pipes 5 lead therefrom to the burners. On the front side of the pipe 4 are the valves 6 which control the gas supply to the burners.
The guard comprises a top plate 7 which is adapted to lie on the top of the stove and project forwardly therefrom, and hinged at the forward edge of said plate is a shield 8 adapted to extend downwardly beneath the valves 6. Rigidly secured on the under side of the plate 7 are the hooked arms or brackets 9 adapted to engage beneath the flange 2 of the stove, and extending downwardly and forwardly from the upper end of each bracket is a resilient catch 10 adapted to extend through an aperture 11 in the shield and prevent the shield from being raised. The outer end of the catch 10 is bent upwardly and then downwardly and forwardly to engage against the front of the shield to hold the shield in place and to facilitate releasing the catch when it is desired to raise the shield.

are the resilient clamps 12, each of whicl comprises a pair of arms which are curved at their lower ends 13 to clamp about the pipe 1. Extending forwardly from the rear arm are ears 14 to which are pivoted a bar or lever 15 having an inturned end 16 adapted to bear against the front arm when the bar is down and force the ends 13 firmly against the pipe 4.
The operation of the construction shown is as follows: The guard is attached to the stove by placing the plate on the top of the stove with the brackets 9 hooked beneath the ledge 2 and the clamps 12 engaging the pipe 4. The levers 15 are then turned downwardly and their ends 16 and the ears 14 force the clamp arms into binding engagement with the pipe. When the shield 8 is turned downwardly to overlap or cover the valves 6 the lower ends of the catches 10 project through the apertures 11 and hold the shield in position to prevent tampering with the valves. lVhen it is desired to operate the valves the ends of the catches are pushed downwardly and the shield may then be swung back onto the plate 7 to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
While but one specific embodiment of the invention has been herein shown and de scribed it will be understood that many de tails of the construction shown may be varied or omitted without departing from the scope of the claims.
I claim:
1. A valve guard for stoves, comprising a plate, a clamp on the plate adapted to grip the gas pipe and hold the plate in position, a depending shield hinged to the forward edge of the plate. and a catch projecting through the shield from the rear thereof adapted to lock the shield in its lowered position.
2. A valve guard for stoves, comprising a plate, a bracket on the plate adapted to hook beneath the front edge of the stove top, a clamp on the plate adapted to grip the feed pipe for the stove, a shield hinged to the plate and adapted to project beneath the valves for the feed pipe, and resilient catches on the plate adapted to engage the shield and hold it in operative position.
3. A valve guard for stoves comprising a plate, a pair of resilient arms extending downwardly from the plate and adapted to grip the gas feed pipe of the stove, a lever pivotally connected to one of said arms and adapted to force the arms toward each other to grip said pipe, an apertured shield hinged to the front of the plate, and a resilient cat-ch supported on said plate and adapted to engage in the apertures in the shield and hold the shield in operative position.
4. A valve guard for stoves, comprising a plate, brackets on the under side of the plate adapted to engage beneath the stove top, resilient arms on the under side of the plate adapted to grip the gas pipe for the stove, means adapted to throw said arms into gripping engagement, a shield hinged MARIE A.
