Be it known that I, FRANCIS D. AMMEN,
a citizen of the United States, residing in New York city, in the'county of NewYork and State of N ew York, have invented'certain new and useful-Improvements in Ty etion of the parts of my 51 shows th WritingMachinea of' which. the following is a specification. l This invention relates -to typewriting machines, and particularly to s ucli'as. are provided with a bichrome ribbon, and which are adapted to beused when desired to form stencils.
v The invention is illustratedI as applied to .a front strike typewriter, in which-the ribbon is normally heldslightly depressedbe- -low the striking face of the platen,- and is raised automatically to come before the type when it strikes. l The object of the invention. is. to enable the ribbon to be actuatedias-fsuggested, an to provide a simple construction which enable the ribbon to be silenced,'that is, held inoperative o r inactive whenl desired, so that the. type may strikedirectly upon the wax sheet on the face of the platen.. In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan, indicating certain parts of afront strike typewriter in dotted lines, and, showing the parts of the invention in full lines.' Ina typewriting machine, in-combination, a vibrator, a lever connected therewith for actuating the same, a universal bar, said lever having an elongated slot therein, with of, an actuator mountedon .said universal `bar and adapted. tobe -raised or lowered thereupomsaid actuator having1 a 4wrist`v running in said. slot, said wristaiording means for normally moving said lever,- `said gap affording means for permittingthemovementof said wrist without-actuating said lever.-

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a pivoted ribbon vibrating lever, of a pin riding in an opening therein, a universal bar actuating said pin to vibrate saidlever, so that when adjacent one end oi said opening it brings one edge of said ribbon to the printing point, and when adjacent the other end of said slot it brings the otheiedge of said ribbon to the printing point, and a break in the Wall of said open- Which said pin may ride idly.
9. In a typewriting machine,- the combination with a pivoted ribbon vibrating lever, of a pin riding in an opening therein, a universal bar actuating said pin to vibrate said lever, so that when adjacent one end of said opening it brings one edge of said ribbon to the printing point, and When adcent the other end of said slot it brings the other edge of said ribbon to the printing point, and a break in the Wall of said opening forming an aperture between said ends in which said pin may ride idly.
