A ril 22, 1930. a MO'N REPPERT 1,1 5 2 1 TYPEWRITING MACHINE Filed Sept. 23, 1927 2 Sheets-Shet 2 mvzmon;
Patented Apr. 22, 1930 v UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE RICHARD voN REIV'PER'I, F HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR r0 UNDERWOOD ELLIOTT FISHER COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y. A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE TYPEWRITING MACHINE This invention relates to power-driven typewriting machines, and more specifically upon my pending application, filed Septemto that class of machines where power-driven electromagnetic forces are employed to drive the type-bars to. a typing position following a partial depression of the associated key-levers. I
The present invention is an improvement ber 15, 1927, Serial No. 219,607, where the semi-depression of a key-lever vibrates an armature, pivotally suspended therefrom to be shifted into the magnetic field of a constantly-rotating magnetized actuator, and, through the magnetic attraction or cohesion of the armature tothe rotating actuator, completes the depression of the key-lever to a predetermined point Where the magnetic control of the actuator is severed in advance ofthe typing movement, to free. the key-lever which responds to the tension of itsrestoring spring. \Vith driving means of this character, itis difiicult for an operator, accustomed to manipulating; the keys by a firm .finger-stroke,
to acquire the softer touch of manipulation for the semi-depression of the keys, where' the softest touch of a key Will immediately eflict a clutching engagement with the rotating magnetized actuator, whereupon the key is withdrawn from under the operators finger, and this results in the finger involuntarily following the key in its downward movement, and as a consequence the keys kick back results in a disagreeable shock to the finger.
' The present invention includes a pivoted keylever, a pivoted sub-lever having a positive driving connection with the type-bar, an intermediary member having a driving connection with the sub-lever, and an abutting or interrupted connection with the key-lever, through which connection a partial depression of the keys-lever vibrates the intermediary member into the magnetic'field of a power-driven, constantly-rotating, magnetized actuator where the magnetic attraction between the actuatorand intermediary memher will convey a driving movement to the sub-lever to drive the type bar; said intermediary member interrupting its magnetic attraction with the magnetized actuator, by its throw to release the sub-lever to the restoring influence of its spring and effect the against the positive stop enables the oper-- ator to more quickly withdraw the fingers from the depressed keys and the possibility of double typing is thereby avoided.
There may be times when it is desirable to actuate'the type-carriers in the usual manner by the key-levers and not by the power-driven mechanism. In the present organization of the parts means are provided, which, by shifting of a key-lever stop-bar to an inoperative position, enable the key-levers to first vibrate the intermediary member against the stationary or inactive power-driving elements,
and then manuall depress the intermediary which becomes a key-actuated driver tothe sub-lever the key-lever, the intermediary and the sub-lever being depressed in unison by the finger-impact at the key, to drive the typing element to the typing position of the platen, and the down stroke of the key-lever being checked in the usual manner by the impact of the type-face against the laten and not by the stop-bar. The stopar in the present instance is pivotally supported and shiftable by a suitable finger-piece to operative or inoperative positions, thus providing a convertible control for the machine that instantly renders the machine operable for either a manual or a power-driven actuation of the typing elements.
A further improvement includes providing each intermediary member with electrical characteristics that become automatically effective at the end of a key stroke to release the intermediary from the magnetic cohesive grip of the rotating actuator with a minimum of resistance, so that the separation or release and its connecting and operatingparts that are co-operative with the power-driven magnetized actuator.
Figure 3 is a diagram of the electrical circuits, showing the electrical connections from the motor-circuit through the magnetized actuator.
Figure 4 is a partial front elevation in vertical section, the plane of the left-hand half of the figure being taken between the two upper banks of the keys, and the plane of the right-hand half being taken just in front of the magnetized actuator.
Figure 5 is a reduced longitudinal section through the magnetic actuator, showing the relative engagement of the solenoid-sections and the manner of connecting the two end sections to the ring-commutator.
Figure 6 shows a key-lever depressed to its stop-position which operates to vibrate the intermediary into the magnetic field of the actuator without vibrating its sub-lever connected to the type-bar, the magnetic attraction from this point being effective to fully vibrate the sub-lever to actuate its type-bar.
Figure 7 shows some of the parts of Figure 6 drawn downwardly to a point where the sublever has reached the end of its stroke and the intermediary is about to respond to its r'estoring spring which withdraws the interme-c diary from the magnetic control of the actuator and permits both sub-lever and type-bar to be restored to their normal positions.
Figurg 8 is a modified form of key-controlled connections'to vibrate an intermediary member or armature into the magnetic field of the actuator to effect the depression of a sub-lever operatively connected to throw a type-bar to type, which, for the compact assembly thereof, renders the magnetic powerdriving features applicable to machines having many banks of keys, as in double keyboard typewriting machines, where each key gperates a type-bar having only a single typeace.
Numeral and alphabet keys 10 and 11. when depressed, operate key-levers 12. which. instead of being fulcrumcd upon the fulcrumrod in the usual manner, are individually ful-- crumed at 13 to the rear end of levers 14:, fulcrumed as a series upon a stationary rod 15. Each lever 1 1 has a pin-and-slot driving connection 16 to vibrate a bell-crank 17 about a fulcrum-rod 18 to drive a type-bar 19 upwardly and rearwardly against the platen 20, rotatably mounted within a carriage 21 traveling upon carriage-rails 22 and 23 under the influence of a carriage-motor 24 and con trolledby a step-by-step carriage-feeding mechanism 25, operated by a universal bar 26, vibrated by each type-bar in typing. The levers 12 and 14: may have individual springs 27 and 28 for restoring each lever independently of the other. From this description it will be noted that each type-bar has a pair of depressible pivoted levers arranged side by side, one lever having a key and no driving connections with the type-bar, and the other lever having no key, but having driving connections to the type-bar, and the latter will be designated hereinafter as sub-levers or a type-bar driving lever. To establish typing co-operation between these two levers 12 and 14, the forward end of each sub-lever may be formed with a downward extension 29, provided with an adjustable saddle 30, pivotally supporting an interponent or intermediary member 31, having a short arm 32 to engage the under edge of the key-lever 12, and further provided with a downwardly-extending arm 33 formed with a section 34 bent over at right angles to present a wide flat face.
The series of intermediary members may be held in vertical alignment, when vibrated by their key-levers, by a suitable comb 35, and a working alignment of the intermediary members with. the key-levers will be further secured by a comb 36 at the front end of the key-levers. Each intermediary member 81 is normally held within the comb 35 under the tension of a spring 35 which has a comparatively light tension to permit the vibration of the intermediary member without vibrating the associated sub-lever 14. and the tension of each key-lever spring 27 is also proportionately light, so that only a very light touch of the finger isrequired to manipulate the machine.
To limit the depression of the key-levers and provide a positive stop-rest for the operators fingers in typing. a rock-shaft 37, having a bearing in each side wall of the machine-frame,is provided with astop-bar 38. the upper edge thereof underlying all the key-levers.
The intermediary member 31 may be formed from soft sheet iron having the electrical properties of an armature to be attracted by a magnetized body. which body. in the present instance, includes a series of coils. assembled end to end and enclosed within the metallic sections that take a cylindrical form to become a rotating permanently magnctizahlc actuator for the intermediary niembers, as' fullyv described in my pending application before me'ntioned. It will be noted that the semi-depression of the keys is limited by a fixed stop which'is restful to the fingers of the operator and enables the operator to more quickly remove the fingers from the depressed keys; that the pendent armature or intermediary member, having a flat face composed of magnetic and non-magnetic properties or characteristics, will roll through the horizontal magnetic axis of the rotating solenoid until the restoring spring of the intermediary member overcomes the quickly diminishing magnetic forces of the solenoid and without any appreciable opposition to the momentum of said intermediary member and its connected parts and that the rocking of the saddle 30 upon the lever-extension 29, by suitable set-screws, raises or lowers the normal position of the armature 33 and adjusts the relative position of the non-magnetic section 57 thereof to the magnetic cylinder 53, to regulate the extent of magnetic depression of the armature and typebar lever to the throw of the type-bar.
Variations maybe resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
