To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WARD S. IRELAND, a resident of Owensboro, in the county of Daviess and State of Kentucky, have 1nvented certain new and useful Improve- .ments in Stenographic VV'riting-Machines;
and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description' of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. u
This invention relates to improvements. in typewriting machines and more particularly to paper feeding mechanism therefor,-.the object of the invention being to provide simple and eicient meansl for insuring suiiicient slack in the paper to prevent possibility,
` under all circumstances, of the paper being torn by the feeding fingers after the type has pressed the paper against the yielding laten. i
iVith this object in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a sectional view of a portion of a typewriting machine showing an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view illustrating the posit-ion or condition of the paper strip with relation .to the guiding devices at-the instant that a type presses the paper strip against the platen; Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the platen and the paper guiding devices associated` therewith, ,and Fig. et is a sectional view illustrating a slight modification.
1 represents al port-ion of the frame of a typewriting machine, wherein is pivotally mounted a plurality of key levers 2 provided respeetively with keys or buttons (not shown) and with upwardly projecting arms 4h A notched bar 5 is disposed transversely in the upper portion of the frame work intermediate the ends thereof and in this notched bar, type levers 6 are pivotally'supported between their ends and each provided at its zipper end with a type 7 ,-the lower ends of said type levers having loosepivotal connection with the upper ends of the key lever arms 4.
Brackets 8 areulcated on the frame 1 at respective sides thereof and to the forward ends yof these brackets, links 9 are hinged and vsupported by the frame work. The forward ends of these links support a trans- A verse platen bar 10, preferably provided with a yielding strip or platen 11.
A shaft 12 (mounted in the brackets 8) extends from one of said brackets 8 to the other and upon this shaft disks, such as indicated at 13, Fig. 1, are mounted. Levers 14 arc mounted' between their ends on the shaft 12 in proximity to the brackets 8 and the upper ends of these levers carry springpressed feed fingers 15, which coperate with certain of the disks 13 to feed the paper and suitable means (not shown) are provided to prevent retrograde movement of the paper after the latter has been fed forwardly.
Standards 16 rise from the platen bar 10 and between thesev standards, guide rolls l17 -18 are mounted. A guide 19 is disposed below the platen bar and may be in the form of an integral flange depending `from the lower edge of said bar. A door 20 is pro-` mlachine and this door carries a bracket 21 in which a supply roll of paper 22 is mounted. The paper strip 22 extends from this roll under the'guide19; then upwardly in front of the platen to and over the ripper feedv roll 17. lAfter passing over the roll 17, the paper stripv is made to pass downwardly and around the roll 18 and from the latter the strip passes rearwardly over the feed disks -13 and under the feed fingers 15.

Suitable inking mechanism is provided,
but as the details of constructionv of this vided for the rear end of the casing of the constitute no part of my present invention, it is unnecessary to make further reference thereto, except to say that the inking ribbon Q9 passes between the type on the type levers and the paper strip.
It wil be observed that the paper strip is bowed or loose between the guides 17 and 19 and that when a key lever is operated, the type will be caused to imprint on this loose or bowed sectioi of the paper strip. ltwill also be observed that when a key lever is operated, the engagement of vits arm l with the universal bar Q3 will cause motion to be transmitted, through the arms or bars 26 and links 27 to the levers 14. Said le vers will thus be caused to rock and to move the feeding fingers 15 and, said feeding fingers being in engagement with the paper strip passing over the disks 13, will cause said paper strip to be moved forwardly a distance sufficient to receive another line of writing and retrograde movement will be prevented by ny suitable means as before stated.
The connecting devices between the universal bar and the paper feeding devices should-be such that the completion of' a feeding movement of the paper and the engagement of a type with the paper will be practically simultaneous. As the paper feeding fingers and type bars are both A moved simultaneously by the universal bar,
the iingerswill feed paper as long as a type bar moves. If 4the type bar moves after gripping the platen, on account of. the pliability 0f the platen face, the fingers will be feeding paper forward after the type has caught the paper and held it; hence there must be some slack in thepaper between the type and fingers for the fingers to' feed to prevent their catching the paper and tearing it. By arranging the guides for the paper in front of the platen, in the manner above explained, the slack inthe paper, which can be taken up by the feeding fingers after 'the type strike, will be provided and in many instances this will be sufiicient.
When a fresh supply roll of paper is placed in the brackets 21, it will be so dis posed that the. paper strip will feed from the bottom cf theroll and in such case the devices hereinbefore described whereby slack is provided, will ,be sufficient, but it may be' desired to write,` u on the other or rear face of the paper strip', and, when both faces of the strip are thus utilized to receive writing and the roll is placed in the brackets 21 so that the said rear face of the .strip may be presented to the writing mechanism, it is necessary to place said roll of/ paper in the bracket 21 in such manner that the strip will feed from the top of the roll as shown in `Fig. 1 of the drawing. It is apparent that when the paper strip is fed hence more frictional resistance to the l movement of the strip will be caused. Under these conditions, the guide devices above described may not afford suiiicient slack in the paper between the type and the platen and it is to insure adequate slack that my present improvements are designed. Thus a weight in the form of a rod or roller 20a is caused by its own gravity to engage the paper strip between the guide roll 18 and the -paper feed devices. This weight or roller is carried at the end of two arms or links which are pivotally attached to the standard 1G, preferably coincident with the axis of the guide roller 18. "When the feeding mechanism is operated in the manner hereinbefore described, the paper strip between the guide roller 18 and the feed devices will become taut and raise the weight or roller 2Ozl and as soon as the type move in a direction away from the platen and thus releases the paper strip, said weight or roller will descend upon the paper strip and act to pull a short portion thereof over the guides 17 and 18 and thus compensate for any frictional resistance to whichthe 'paper strip may have been subjected on account of the sharp angle` at the guide 19 and insure suflicient slack in the paper passing in front of the platen to accomplish the results in the' feeding of the paper as hereinbeforc explained. t

'the upper guide roller 17 may be dispensed with and the paper-caused to pass directly from the guide roller 18 under the weight or roller 2Oa as illustrated in Fig. 4t.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is; v
1. In a typewriting machine, the combination with framework, a platen mounted therein, paper guiding means spaced from the platen, paper feeding mea-ns rearwardly of the platen, and Aoperating means for the paper feeding means, of-a yielding tensionI roller supported by the framework independently of the feeding means and the op-` erating means for the latter, said tension roller being located to engage the paper at a point between the guiding-means and the paper feeding means.
2. In a typewriting machine, the coinbination with a platen, typebars, paper feeding devices, guiding devices for paper passing between the type on the type-bars and the platen, and means for Voperating the type-bars and feeding devices,"of a yielding weight in position to engagethe paper between the guiding and feeding devices and operating to depress the paper to produce slackin that portion thereof passing between vi'L-he type and the away from the paper and platen.
