late residing in the borough of Manhattan, county, city, and State of New York, invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writing Machines, of which the following is a specilication.
The present invention relates to ribbonfeeding .and vibrating mechanism for typelwriting machines. More particularly the invention relates to mechanism, 'of this character, in a typewriting machlne 1n which the platen 'is carried on a frame shiftable between two or more case-positions on the main frame'.
An object of the invention is to have the nisms of such construction that they may be in large part mounted on the shiftable platen frame in a compact and convenient manner; the parts being readily accessible for setting and assembling, simple in opera tion, and of inexpensive manufacture. A feature of the invention vis a novel connection of the ribbon mechanisms, on the shiftable platen frame, to a universal bar, on the operable' at type-strokes; the connection being iexible or capable of accommodating itself to the diHerent caseppsitions ofthe platen frame, so-that the ribbon mechanisms need at no time be disconnected from the universal bar. The manner which the ribbon vibrator is supported for oscillation at typefstrokes,
and in which this support is adjustable relatively to the vibrator to shorten or len hen the enective ribbon-throwing arm of t e vibrator, is made the subject-matter of my d1- visional application 151,173, led February 27, 1917, as well as the provision for lock- .ing the vibrator support in any adjusted dering op'erative or inoperative either of the spool-driving mechanisms; and a device by means of which, in reversing the direction of ribbon feed, the driving mechanism at one spool is rendered operative and that .at the other spool simultaneously rendered lnoperative. j
In a preferred form of the invention, the platen frame is shifta'ble substantially recti linearly between case-positions, so that the platen and the ribbon-vibrating and feeding, mechanimns all have practically 4the same movement, and maintain their relative positions.

A suitable spring (not shown) `returns the universal bar to normal position when the key is released, and a suitable stop (not shown) determines the normal position of the universal bar and other parts connected thereto;
To ears 30 on the side plates 31 of the shiftable platen frame 12, are secured cups -32, onev at each side of the machine, to receiver the ribbon spools 33 and 34. Journaled in ears 37 and 39 of brackets secured by screws 38 to the side'plates 31 of the platen frame are shafts 35, onto each of which one of the spools is adapted to be placed for` rotation therewith. Each shaft 35 is interiorly threaded to receive a screw 36, the head of which holds the shaft against longitudinal displacement upward. Fast to. each shaft 35 is a hub 40, and fast to each hub is a disk 41 carrying a pin'42, which pro3ects upward and is adapted to enter a hole 43 in the lower end-plate 44 of the spool when the spool is slipped down over the shaft and is turned thereon to bring the hole 43 into registration with the pin 42. The spool and hub 40 are thus interlocked for rotation together. -A spring 46, attached at 47 to the interior of the shaft, carries a ball 48, which a bend in the spring tends to throw laterally'. The spring yields to permit the ball to press through the spool bearing,V
but when the spool is seated, the ball snaps over to engage the upper end-plate 49 of the spool, thus holding the spool against accidental upward displacement on the shaft. The ribbon 50 is led from one spool to the Laea'caa other through openings 51 in the spool cups, and between the lips 51a and 51b of a guide piece 52 secured by screws 52a to the base of the cups 32. The cups 32 have large openings32a in the base thereof to permit them to be set in place over thev shafts 35 and attached parts.
Fast to each hub 40 is a ratchet wheel 53, by means of which the spool is turned step by step at type strokes. Loose on each shaft 35, between the bracket-ear 39 and a washer 55, is an arm 54; and pivoted'to the end of the arm54 is a pawl 56, held resiliently in engagement with the teeth ofthe ratchet wheel by a spring 57, for turning the ratchet wheel when the arm 54 is vibrated. Pivoted to the base ofthe cup 32 (see Fig. 3), and held resiliently to the ratchet wheel by a spring 58, is a pawl 60 for holding the ratchet wheel when the pawl 56 is returning to normal position a ter each feed.
Each arm 54 has depending therefrom a pin 61 which lies between two prongs 62,

-naled in bracket arms 68, which are secured to a cross plate 69 of the main frame near each side thereof, (see Fig. 1). Also fast to the shaft 67 is an arm 70, connected by a link 71 to the universal bar. Depression of the universal bar by a type key therefore rocks the shaft 67, to throw forward the links 65 and rock the levers 63, thus effecting a one-step feed of the ribbon.r The universal bar, in returning. to normal position, also returns the levers 63 and pawl-carrying arms 54 to normal position. A preferred means for connecting the link 65 to the lever 63', and one which permits of ready separation and union of thetwo, is shown in Figs.
4 and '6, in which a pivot pin 63E` fast to the link 65 passes through a bearing hole in the lever 63, and through a spring strip 65a attached to the link 65. The spring 65a prevents accidental disconnection of the lever 63 and link 65, but yields to permit of withdrawal of the pin 63a from Vthe lever 63 when proper force is applied. It will be noted that the link 65 .maintains the connection of the arm 66, on the main frame, to the lever63, on the platen frame, in all casepositions, and during the shift, of the latter. A shift of the platen frame, merely causes the lever 63 and link 65 to assume a different angular position, and the pawl 56 to be moved slightly to a dierent set position on the ratchet wheel; the operation of the parts at type strokes is not` changed.
rlhe ribbon may be fed in either direction; and the direction of feed may be reversed when desired. ile one spool is effecting antenas the feed, the pawl l56 at the other spool is held out of engagement `with the ratchet wheel at that spool, and vibrates idly at type strokes.v It will be noted (see Fig. 1) that the pawls 56 and 60` at the right-hand spool are arranged to feed that `spool in clockwise direction, whereas the pawls at the left-hand spool are arranged for effecting a feed in counter-clockwise direction. For holding the pawl .idle at one spool while the feed there is, on eachshaft 35, a cam plate 72 haring a hub portionl55 and held in place by thswasher 55a between the hub 40 and the pawl carrying arm 54. Each cam 'plate is adapted to be turned on the shaft, and has a cam surface 73and a dwell 74, bymeans of which, when the cam is. turned in the proper direction, the pawl 56 is forced out of the ratchet wheel,` and held away `from the. same, (see the right-hand spool in Fig. 1),` Each cam plate also has a cam surface 75 and a dwell 76 for similarly and simultaneously throwing and holding the back,- check pawl 60, thus leaving the spool free to turn as the ribbon is drawn ofl' it by the feeding action of the other spool. The cam surfaces 73 and 75 at one spool are incllned oppositely to those at the other spool, so that when the cams are swung in thel same direction, the ratchet wheel, while the other releases the pawls to thesprings which throw them into the ratchet wheel.
For operating the cam plates, each has integral therewith depends a pin 78. Pivoted at 79 to the front plate 24 of the mainframe, opposite each spool, isl an arm 80, the freevend of which has an offset, horizontal finger 81 which is forked to embrace loosely the drepending pin 78 o n theadjacent cam plate.- The pins 78 are of such length that the engagement of the same with the forked fingers `81 'is maintained" in all case-positions of the platen. One of the arms. 80. also carries a finger piece 82, by means of which it may be rocked to throw the cam plate in one or the` other direction. The two arms 80 are connected by a link 83so that both vcam plates may be thrown simultaneously in reversing the direction of feed of the ribbon.
Between the' spools, and just to thel left of a type guide 84 on the segment 85 at .printing point,v the ribbon is threaded through an eye or slot' 86 in a carrying arm 86. At the right ofthe printmg point, the ribbon is held and guided between two spring clips 87 and 88 securedA to the platen frame. The clip 88 may also serve as" a paper guide. l at type strokes, (except 1n stenc1l1ng) ,.\to printing point,
and thereafter to return it to a normalfpoonel disengages the pawls from an armV 77,'from which the shifting operations.
The carrier 86 is vibratedv pende tion below the printing point. The cara strip of sheet metal turned on itself to have a part 89, by means of which it is braced for rigidity. The carrier is on a pivot pin 90 held in ears on a bracket 91 secured to the left-hand side plate 31 of the shiftable platen frame. Its point of support thus maintains the same position with respect to the platen in all y case-positions of the latter. The normal, or is effected at the other,
nonprinting,v position of the carrier, (shown in full lines in Fig. 2) ,l is determined by contact of a stopnger 92 on the carrier against the sidelate of the platen frame. For shifting t e carrier at type strokes, to the dotted line position in Fig. 2, to present the ribbon to the printing point, there is a link 93, one end of which hooks into a hole 86b in the carrier, and the other end of which connects with a vibratory plate 94 on a bracket ari'n 95 secured to a cross plate 96 forming part of the shiftable platen frame. rlhe bracket arm 95 may also be braced from the side plate 31 of the platen frame by a strip of metal 97. The plate 94 is slotted at 98 to engage a pin 99.0n the bracket 95; and pivoted on the pin 99 is a link 100, pivotally connected by a pin 101 to a link 102. en the parts are set for printing, as distinguished from stenciling, the pin 101 also lies in the slot 98, so that reciprocation of the link 102 causes the plate 94 to be rocked, (for example, between the full and dotted line positions l causing'the carrier-'to be moved down with the ribbon. The link 102 is pivotally connected at106 to the lever 63 which operates the ribbon-feeding mechanism, and

Forsten ciling, There ribbon ,no throw of the ribbon is desired. are therefore three settings of the vibrator, andthe action thereof deupon the positionof the pins 99 and 101 in the slot 98 of the plate 94. This change of position of the pins is e'ected by shifting the plate on its supporting arm 95; and for this purpose, the arm 104, which carries the pin 103 in the slot 105, forms part of a finger lever 107 pivoted at 108 to the bracket 95. If the lever 107 be moved to the right from Fig. 5 position, the pin 103 shifts the plate 94 downward and at the same time effects an angular shift of the same to the right, thereby causing the pin 101 to pass from the slot 98 into a slot 109, which, in this position of the plate, will extend in the direction of reciprocation of the link 102. Reciprocation of the link 102, when the plate 94 is so shifted, results in back and forth movement of the pin 101 in the slot 109 without vibration of the plate 94 or of the ribboncarrierf; and the parts are thus set in so-called neutral position for stenciling. If, on the other hand, the linger lever107 is moved to the left from Fig. 5 position, the pin 103 will cause the plate '94 to be lifted, and at the same time shifted angularly to the left,l leaving both pins 99 and 101 in the slot 98, but with a longer arm from the pin 101 to the point of connection of the link 93 to the plate, and also providing for a greater angular throw of the plate 94 when the latter is vibrated.' This last setting of the plate 94 therefore provides for a greater movement of the ribbon' carrier at type strokes than when the parts are set as in Fig. 5, and is the setting for printing from the red zone of the ribbon. The Fig.. 5 setting is the setting for'printing from the black zone of the ribbon.
For locking the plate 94 in any ofits settings the finger lever 107 has an extension 110 with three recesses 111, 111", and 111n in its edge.A anyone of these recesses, according to the 'angular position of the lever 107, is. a pin 112 carried by an arm 113,-pivoted at 11,4A
to the bracket 95. A spring 115, connecting the arm 113 to the bracket 95, holds the pin 112 in Whichever of the recesses'it registers with, and prevents accidental displacement of the lever 107 and plate 94. The pin 112 is cammed out by the teeth when the lever 107 is thrown to re-set the plate 94. j
All parts of the ribbon vibrating mechanism, and of the mechanism for setting the ribbon for different colors, and for stenciling, are seen to be carried by the shiftable platen frame, excepting only the connections from the lever 63 to the universal shaft; and even these last connections are at all ytimes maintained unbroken. A shift of the platen frame, as pointed out, changes the angular positionof the lever 63, and in so doing shifts the link 65 somewhat; and the link 65 in shifting, may change somewhat the setting of the plate 94. change is not sucient, however, to aect the described operations of the mechanisms at t pe strokes.
