BUST-SUPPORTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 12, 1912.
Application filed July 1, 1911. Serial No. 836,528.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LYDIA Mnn'rnmi and EDWARD J. PAYNE, citizens of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bust-Supporters; and -we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable othersskilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention is a new and useful improvement in devices for holding up and supporting the bust and is designed for the use of women having heavy busts as well as for the use of women having little or no bust.
The device for which a patent is herein sought is built into and madea part of the corset and is espe ially designed to hold up and support the bust, comfortably and properly, in a correct and natural position, the corset being cut so low as to come consider" ably below the bust, so that the front steels cannot press upon the thorax in any manner or degree, the corset, with this improvement being adapted to be worn .by women having but little or no bust, in lieu of any other pads or artificial bust. I
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention, Fig. 2 is a detail view showing the skeleton frame of one of the bust supporters, and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view.
Referencenow being made to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the stays, made of corset steel, which are disposed at; inclinations and which are to extend the entire length of the corset girdle I to which the device is firmly and permanently affixed, and above said corset to such points as will bring said stays A to positions immediately below the bust in natural position, secured to the upper end each stay is a wire I? fastened thereto 11 means of clamp l3, winch is curved and bent to the natural shape of the bust. the ends of the wire not meeting, but ending aislittle distance from each other at the top of the supporter C, a fabric I covers the stays A and other fabric E formed into a cup-like shape to fit over the bust. fills the oval formed by the wire B and said fabric 13' also joins the two ends of the wire l3, ermitting said oval to be expanded t the 1111 size allowed by the wire. or to be adjusted to a smaller size by bending said wire so that the ends are close together, the fabric E be ing folded over at the top side of the supporter when the ends of the wire 13, are close together, and making the smaller sized su iporter; a strap ll attached to the top of each supporter, and may extend over the shoulder of the wearer and be fastened to the back of the corset. This strap part of the device is for the additional support of unusually heavy busts.
lVhat we claim to be new is:--
1. A bust supporter, comprising a corset girdle, bust supporting stays secured to said girdle, and projecting above the latter. a a wire fixed to each Lust supporting stay, the upper ends of said wires being spaced apart and a fabric covering the wires and bringing the space between the free ends of the latter, as set forth.
2. A bust supporter. comprising a corset girdle, bust srnvporting stays secured to said girdle, a clamping member secured to each stay, a wire fastened to each clamping member, the free ends of said wires being spaced apart. a fabric covering the stays and bric ging the space between the free ends of said wires. as set forth.
In testimony whereof we hereunto atiix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
LYI)I.\ M ARTELL. EDWARD J. PAYNE.
