Mrlvessgs //YVNTOIf UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PHILIP B. HARRISON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO CHICAGO RAILWAY EQUIP- IVIENT COMPANY, OF GI-IICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
CLIP FOR GUARD-FINGERS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP B. HARRISON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Clips for Guard-Fingers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the aecompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevational view of my improved clip detached. Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the same in position on a compression member. Fig. 3 is an end elevational View of said clip in position on a compression member. Fig. 41 is a modified form.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in clips for the attachment of guard fingers, release springs and the like, the object being to construct a clip of the character described which will tightly clamp that part of the beam on which it is mounted and provide a rigid support for the guard finger or release spring which the clip is designed to carry.
Another object is to construct the clip in such manner that one portion thereof constitutes a hinge between two walls whereby the clip may be opened and closed without fracturing the metal at the hinged portion.
Another object is to provide the seat for the legs of the compression member whereby the same may be wedged in position, such wedging action tending to hold the clip in place.
In the drawings: 1 indicates the compression member or part of the brake beam on which the clip is mounted.
2 is the bottom wall of the clip having an outwardly extending lug 3 at one side from which extends a stop projection 41. At the opposite end of this bottom wall the clip is refolded as indicated at 5, so as to form a hinge portion from which extends the upper wall 6, said upper wall having an outwardly extending lug 7 provided with a stop projection 8 which latter cooperates with the projection 4 when the clip is in Specification of Letters Patent.

position. A bolt 9 passes through the lugs 3 and 7, said bolt also providing a mount for the guard finger or release'spring as the case may be. 10 indicates projections extending upwardly from the bottom wall 2, said projections forming wedge seats for the legs of the compression member.
In operation the clip is open as shown in Fig. 1 and slipped over the compression member after which the workman forces the upper wall down over the compression memher and by the blows of a hammer drives the legs of the compression member into wedge seats provided by the ribs or projections 10, so as to firmly secure the clip in position. The belt S) may now be introduced to hold the clip in place.
In Fig. 1 I have shown a modified form of my invention in which the compression member or part of the brake beam on which the clip is mounted, is of channel shape.
That I claim is:
1. A brake beam clip for guard fingers and the like, having a refolded hinged portion connecting two walls thereof, said walls having registering lugs, stop projections on said lugs, and a fastening device passing through said lugs.
2. A brake beam clip for guard fingers, having a re-folded hinge portion connecting two walls thereof.
3. A brake beam clip, comprising a bottom wall provided with means for wedging the legs of the part of the brake beam on which the clip is mounted, and means for holding said clip in its wedged position.
4. A brake beam clip for guard fingers and the like, the same comprising two walls connected together by a hinge portion, said walls having outwardly extending projections, a fastening device passing through said projections, and means for wedging the part of the brake beam on which the clip is mounted into position.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses, this 17 day of November, 1911.
PHILIP B. HARRISON. IVitnesses:
Enw. T. WVALKER, M. F. HUNTOON.
