IN VENTOR MW WITNESSES C/MMM .NrTEn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WLADISLAW WALKIEWIGZ, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
oURTA'IN-PQLE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb. 2'7, 1912.
Application filed December 4, 1911. Serial No. 663,757.
to furnish a pole with simple and effective.
means for holding the upper ends of ourtains or draperies without injuring the same; second, to provide a pole with a clamping member that can be easily and quickly locked in engagement with the pole to firmly hold the upper ends of curtains;
. third, to obviate the necessity of using rings and pins for connecting curtains to a pole, and fourth, to accomplish the above results by a curtain pole that is durable and highly eflicient for the purposes for which it is intended.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed. I
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein there are illustrated the preferred embodiments of the invention, but it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawing :*-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a curtain pole in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same, partly broken away and partly in section. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view of the pole. Fig. 4: is a perspective view of a detached locking member, and Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view of the pole illustrating a modification of the invention.
A curtain pole in accordance with this invention comprises a rod 1 having a rear flat face 2 that permits of said rod being mounted against a window frame or other support.
Arranged upon the front side of the rod 1 is a clamping member 3 corresponding in length to said rod, said member being substantially semi-cylindrical, with the inner face thereof concave to confront the rod 1 and hold the upper ends of curtains or draperies in engagement with said rod. The
outer face of the member 3 is flat, as at t and the inner face of said member, at the ends thereof, is provided with recesses 5 confronting recesses 6 in the outer side of the rod 1. In the recesses 5 and 6 are lo cated coiled compression springs 7 and the tension of the springs is sufiicient to hold the member 3 out of engagement with the rod 1, said springs opening the member 3 when said member is released to permit of curtains being placed in position or removed from the pole.
Connected to the upper and lower sides of the rod 1, at the ends thereof, by screws 8 or other fastening means are forwardly projecting parallel arms 9 having the forward ends thereof provided with yertically alining slots or openings 10. With reference to Fig. 3, the forward end of one arm is in elevation and the forward end of the opposite arm in section.
Pivotally mounted in the openings 10 are angle lugs 11 carried by locking members 12 having lips 13 and flanges or webs 14. The locking members are cut and stamped from malleable metal with the lips 13 and the flanges 14 at right angles to the body of said member and the lugs 11 forming a continuation of the flanges 14:. With the free end of the locking member in engagement with the clamping member 3, the lip 13 of the locking member engages and holds the clamping member 3 in engagement with the curtains placedbetween the rod 1 and said clamping member, the springs 7 being under tension. lVith the locking member swung outwardly, the clamping member 3 is removed a sufficient distance from the rod 1 to liberate the upper ends of the curtains.
In Fig. 5 of the drawing there is illustrated a slight modification f the invention, wherein the end of the locking member has a barrel 15 supported by a bracket 16 having the ends thereof mounted in the upper and lower sides of the rod 1, as at 17. The clamping member is designated 18 and is in the form of a rod that extends into a longitudinal concavity 19 of the rod 1.
The elements 1 and 3 can be made of light and durable wood or metal and the remain ing parts of the pole of metal finished to harmonize with the finish of the rod 1 and the clamping member 3.
What I claim is 1. A curtain pole comprising a rod, a semi-cylindrical clamping member arranged at the front side of said rod and adapted to retain curtains in engagement therewith, coiled compression springs arranged between said rod and said clamping member, at the ends thereof, the locking members having lips adapted to engage the outer side of said clamping member for holding said member in a closed position, and means for pivotally supporting said locking members adjacent to the ends of said rod.
2. In a curtain pole, a rod, a clamping member adapted to hold curtain in engagement with said rod, coiled compression springs interposed between said rod and said member, at the ends thereof, parallel forwardly projecting arms carried by said rod, at the ends thereof, and locking members pivotally supported by the forward ends of said arms for engaging the clamping mem ber whereby said member will be locked with said springs under tension.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
