Letters la-cnft. No. 101,842, datedApfril 12, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN MOLDS FOR CASTING PIPE.
wwf-m The'Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part 'of the same.
Ihe nature of my invention consists in so forming -the core that it will of itself form a suitable end or buttress against which the metal will form, and, thus produced, being sufficientfor the bearing or gasket, while the remainder of the flange may be suiiioiently drawing to be molded inthe ordinary manner, the object being to produce pipes with true bearing ends in a simple, cheap, and workmanlike manner.
Description of the Acconwanying Drawing.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a half flask, with a. pattern and core points.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section through the same. Figures 3,4, and 5 are sect-ions in detail.
General Description.
A B, figs. I and 5, represent the flask, which may be made, as shown in iig. 1, to suitsthe style of pipe.
K K D O, fig. 1, represent the pattern, L L L being metallic cores for forming the bolt-holes in the C', figs. Z and 5, represents the core-spindle.
D', inthe same figures, represents the sand-core, and is made, as shown, with` a shoulder, d, which forms the bearing-surface for the gasket. Ihis shoulder il may be made so as to form a simple rabbet in the end of the pipe, as shown in iig. 2, or to form an annular sinkage, as shown in fig. 5.
The character and size of this rabbet or sinkage may be varied at will.
The core D may be formed upon the spindle C by the ordinary process of turning up or it n'iaybe partially turned; and, in ease the shoulder (l is not readily made by this process, it may he molded, that is, formed in a suitable core-box.
That part of the flange H which extends beyond the core is made sniiiciently drawing to admit of being' molded in the ordinary manuel'.
In fig-s. 3 and 4 I have represented in section' the ends of' two pipes as they appeal' when bolted together, with the gasket M between them.
In g. 3 the gasket is represented as being held by simple rabbets, while in iig.l 4 it is held by a trapezoidal sinkage.
I claim as my invention- 'Ihe core D, with shoulders d, for casting flangepipes or columns, substantially as described and f'ort-he purpose set forth.
