LUMINOUS i DIAL.
, Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 20, 1912.
Application filed fieoember 7, 1910. Serial No. 596,074.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a device having a maximum illumi hating etiiciency with a minimum use of iilulninating material.
To this end, the invention embraces a construction wherein the characters to be illuminated are formed by openings in a front member or dial, which openings are shaped to conform to the characters to be exposed, the illuminating material being disposed on a rear member or dial and shaped to conform to the contours of the openings formin the characters in the front member b or dial.
in the drawings:-F1gure 1 illustrates afront dial or member embodying one for un of my invention. Fig. 2, illustrates a rear member or dial adapted for use in connection With the dial in Fig. i. Fig. 8 lllllSr trates a modified form.
Like characters ot reference designate siniilar parts throughmit the diil'crent tires of the drawing.
A. front member, indicated by l, is illustrated in the form of a dial having openings in the form shown the characters are 12, 1, I In the rear of said trout dial or meml'ier 1, a rear member or dial is adapted 2, outlining the characters to be (:XPOSQtl to be disposed and a said rear dial or meniher 3 is provided .with characters formed ot a selteilluminating substance, oi. any de sired ingredient, indicated at a. The chal acters 4 on the dial 3 are adapted to be'dis-- posed in registrv with the openings 2 of the dial 1, and they conform to the openings an opening of the dial 1, the characters of the latter are illuminated in a manner to render it easy to read thetime of day. I
It will be readily seen that the amount of self illuminating substance necessary in my improved construction, is reduced to a minimum While the efficiency and brilliancy of the disclosure of the characters is in no Way impaired. If desired, the characters in the dial 1 can be edged with any suitable color of paint so as to render the characters more easily visible in daylight.
In accordance with the form shown in Fig. 3, the characters 5, on the front dial (5, are formed by a series of perforations disosed in a manner to conform to the outline of the characters to be disclosed. This form is particularlyadvantageous for facilitating the reading of time by daylight, as the juxtaposition of the perforations forming each letter, servesto greatly strengthen the effectiveness of the outlines of such letters or characters. The rear member 3-, may be used in connection with the dial 6, in the manner hereinbetore described.
1. In a seltdlluminating device, the com- ]ination with a front member provided with outlining a character, and an element, in the rear of the opening of said member and provided with a self-illuminating substance shapcd to conform to the contour of the opening in said member and disposed in registry with said OPGillIlP'.
2. In a self-ill'tu'z'iinating device, the coin bin-ation with a front member provided with an opening,.and a rear member or element provided With a seltdlluminating substance shaped to conform to the character to be disclosed and disposed in registry with said openin In testii'i'iony whereof I'atfix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
