DICTIONARY-KEY. Y
y Application filed June 15,'
To all whom t may concern Y Be it known that I, lCONSTANTINE SAvri- SKY, formerly a citizen of Russia, (having declared my intention of becoming a citiaen of the United States,) residing in the city and county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new anduseful lmpi'ovements in Dictionary-Keys; and l do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the' art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. V
TheV object ofthis invention is to p rovide a key for use with dictionaries which .will facilitate ythe finding of words, particularly when using foreign-language dictionaries.
The device is designed more particularly for the use of people with little education, who findthe use of dictionaries difiicult.
Briefly, the invention comprises a key provided with a master page for each letter of the alphabet, each master page being followed by la plurality of key pages. The master page classifies all of the words under the given letter under a few main heads` and further indicates where the different classifications will be'found on the key pages im-V mediately following. Each. key page carries the numbers of several dictionary pages,
the guide .words which are found at the top ofV each dictionary page being used in connection withthe pagenumbers, and several of the main roots found in the respective columns of the dictionary pagesalso being given.
In the drawings: e
Figure 1 shows a master page.
Fig. 2 indicates a key page which in use is approximately the size of the master pages.
Fig. 3 indicates a dictionary page; and
Fig. 4 shows a stamped diagram to be used in connection with the key.
Each master page 10 carries one of theV letters of the alphabet on a projecting tab in a well-known manner. The page is provided with a plurality of main classifica tions 12, which are divided under the vowg els and also under other commonly-occurring letters. Thus the words under C may be divided under Ca, Ce, Ch, Ci, Cl, C0, Cr,

i920. semi noasaaaa Cu andUy. Eachl of the divisions 12falso carries a notation at 14 of the numbers of the key pages 15 under the given master page to which the specific Vdivision refers.
Where the division is rather large, it may 2 be further subdivided, asshown under Co, where the various main roots found on each page are given. At the left of each division l12 there is shown at 16 the number of wordsl which are found in the dictionary under thespeeific division. under Ca there'are 1,003 words, these words being numbered consecutively in thejdictionary. Under Co there are 2,145 words,
For instance,
At 18 the numbers of the dictionary pages l Y under which the given division isfound are indicated; thus the words found .in pages 141 to 165 of the dictionary, and under Cothe words yare found from page 196 to page 254.
under Ca are l Each keypage 15 is provided withl two columns, which represent the two columns of the dictionarypagel). e Each of the columns carries the rekaspective` dictionary page number, as indicated vat 20,l and at the left carries the guide letters `22'foiind on the left of the dictionary page, and at the right the guide letters 24 found'at the right of the dictionary page. For conveniencevin'finding a given root, the main roots found in each column of the given dictionary page are also shown under theproper page number 20, and in the proper column, as indicated at 25. i
,As above indicated, vthe words under each mainv division in the dictionary Vare numbered consecutively, these numbers being'indicated in Fig. 3 at 26. 4 u
In lusing the key, the student turns to the master key page 10 for the given letter. As-
Sum@ fhit'the' word tobe found is ,Combf "y He looks' down the mai'n'divisions 12 Vuntil he finds Co. Under this he will find the root Com to be on pages 11, 12 andl. He turns to key page 11 under master page C, and finds Comb at the bottom of the page, this being found in connection with the dictionary page number 206. He turns to page 206 of the dictionary and finds the word,v which is numbered v419. To facilitate this work, especially where the student'may wish' to refer to the same word several times in 7 mastering a given passage, a diagram is to be used which is preferably stamped on a sheet ef paper by means of a rubber stamp. This diagram is indicated at 30 in Fig.- 4.
1t contains a space 118 in which Will be placed the numeralsfound at position 18 on the master page, which indicate the dictionary pages of the main division Co. A space, 112, is provided in Which the numbers of the key pages 15 are to be placed, which indicate said main divisions. ,lWhere the main division is small, these will be the numbers indicated at 14; Where the main division is large, the numbers will be the appropriate ones found in greater detail, as under Co, Where the root Com is to be found on key pages 11, 12 andgl. Thus, for the Word Comb. the space 112 Will carry the numerals 11-18. Space 120 is provided to receive the page number 2O when found on the respective key page 15, which, in the present instance, is 206. @n the lower line of the diagram,k space 126 is provided in Which to place the dictionary number of the particular Word, thisbeing 119 for the Word Comb. Alongside space 126 thereV is provided space 220 for the purpose of placing the dictionary page number in close proximity to the Word number. The Word being found is Written in space 32 and the foreign equivalent or the definition, as the case may be, is
Written in space 34. l/Vhere foreign dictionaries are used, which are provided in tivo parts, as is frequently the case, a space 35 may be provided in order to indicate lpart 1 or part 2, as the'case may be. Thus, by usingthis diagram, the Wordrmayv be re-. ferredto as frequently as desired in case it is necessary to look up different shades of meaning, the page number of the dictionary being given, and the Word number also being given.
It is not to be understood that this device will save any great amount of time in the use of a` dictionary, either foreign or domestic, by a Well educated person, but Where the person has very little education and finds the use of the dictionary tedious, it Will save much time, particularly Where it may be necessary to refer frequently to the saine Word forV dierent shades of meaning.
