Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 15,1221.
Application filed August 31, 1920. Seria1 No. 497,262.
To all 107mm t may concern Be it known that l, BOY R. MELTON, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Camden, in the county of Benton and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Atutomobile Number-Plates, ot which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to automobile license tags and particularly to a device hav ing novel means whereby a body or main element or pla-te is provided, the said invention having for its object the provision of a plate or tag resulting in great economy for renewals or subsequent years lin the main body of the plate is permanent, the said plate being provided with removable parts indicating the change in the year so that the only necessity for renewing the license is to secure a new year plate, a part of the device which is relatively small and comparatively inexpensive, so that is not necessary to discard the whole plate each year, but it is only necessary to discard a small part thereof hearing the year date or number.
A still further object of this invention is to produce a plate of the character indicated, having novel means for removably securing the supplemental plate therein so that it can be easily applied or removed.
l/Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reterence will be had rto the accompanying drawings forming part of this speciiication wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure l is a view in perspective of license plate embodying the invention,
Fig. 2 a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 4 a plan view of the plate on a reduced scale, and
Fig. 5 a plan view of the demovable tag on the same scale.
In these drawings 10 denotes the number plate which may have suitable indicia thereyhave coinciding apertures 16 and 17 to receive tastenings by which the plate can be secured to a bracket oi' the lamp.
The plate furthermore has a depending ear 18 which is bent upwardly in front orp the recess of the plate to form a guide for the lower end of the tag, as fully shown in F ig. 2.r
lt will be seen that a plate made in accordance with this invention will result in a saving in the second year of the whole plate, as well as its numbering, and that only the year tag need to be renewed, andV as the year tag is a comparatively small part of the structure the saving will be comparatively great.
l claim:
1. ln an automobile number plate, a body having a portion throughout the vertical dimensions ot the plate proper extending rearwardly, the edges of the rearwardly er;- tending portion being doubled on the plate and spaced from the plate to form guideways, an integral ear on the lower edge of the rearwardly extending portion, the said ear heilig shaped to embrace the lower ends of the guide-ways and extending upwardly to guard the lower ends of the said guideways, and a year plate slidable in the said guide-ways having` its lower end embraced by the said ear.
2. ln an automobile number plate, a body havino' a portion throughout the vertical dimensions ot the plate proper extending rearwardly, `the edges ot the rearwardly extending portion being doubled on the plate and spaced from the plate to :torni guideways, an integral ear on the lower edge of the rearwardly extending portion, the said ear being shaped to embrace the lower ends of the guide-ways and extending upwardly to guard the lower ends ot' the said guideways, a year plate slide le in the guidelvays and having its lower end embraced by the ear, and a rearwardly extending upper end on said yearplate embracing the upper edge of the rearwardly extending portion of the said plate. Y
3. In an automobile number plate, a body having a portion throughout the vertical dimensions of the plate proper extending rearwardly, the edges of the rearwardly eX- tending portion being doubled on the plate and spaced from the plate to form guideways, an integral ear on the lower edge of the, rearwardly extending portion, the Said ear being shaped to embrace the lower ends of the guide-ways and extending upwardly to guard the lower ends or" the said guideways, a year plate slidable in the said guideways having its lower end embraced by the ear, a rearwardly extending upper end on Said year plate embracing the upper edge of the Vrearwardly extending portion of the said plate, and an element extending through the plate and the year plate for preventing Vertical movement of the year plate.
