Specification of Letters Patent.

Bc it known that we, AUSTIN H. ROBY and CHARLES H. CUTTER, r'espectively of Malden, in the county of Middlesex and State, of Massachusetts, and of Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Poster-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to means for holding sheets such as are commonly known as posters, it being the common practice to apply such sheets to what are known as bill boards, by means of paste. This form or method of placing posters for exhibition requires the spending of considerable time, as well as skill, in fastening the posters smoothly; also, when the period of exhibition has passed, it has been necessary either to apply other posters over the old ones, or to spend considerable time in removing the old ones.

The object of our present invention is to provide means whereby unskilled people can put up posters for exhibition carefully, removing the old ones when necessary, avoiding the necessity for the use of paste, and at the same time, provide for preventing access of wind behind the sheets.

To these ends our invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, substantially as hereinafter described and claimed.

The same reference figures represent the same parts in all of the figures.

Referring first to Figs. 1 to et, inclusive, a suitable backing 10 is provided, which backing may be a rectangular frame of any size and adapted to be supported in any manner, or which may be supposed to be a portion of a bill board or fence constructed for Preferably, the backing is recessed, as shown, so that the frame 11 will fit therein with the front surfaces of the backing and frame flush. One bar of the frame 11 is connected by hinges 19. with the backing. This bar may be the lower one, as shown in the drawings, or either of the other members of the frame. Suitable fastenings 13 are also provided to hold the frame in its position for clamping the sheet or poster a which is indicated in the drawings only by dotted lines.

The essential feature of our invention is, that the frame is provided with a sheet binding rib, which may be a rearwardly projecting edge 16 of the frame. The rib serves to clamp the sheet a to the backing, to hold the edges of the sheet and prevent the poster from wrinkling, and prevent air, when the wind blows, from getting behind the sheet so as to loosen or tear it. To aid in holding the sheet or poster, especially when it is being placed against the backing and before the frame has been put in place, we may provide pins 17 projecting forward from the backing but behind the frame.

Then the device is constructed for use in connection wit-h large posters, we preferably employ rods or wires 18, which may cross the sheet in any direction, but these may be omitted when the device is constructed only for small posters.

It will now be understood that when a sheet or poster is put up, anunskilled per-A son can perform the operation, and do it neatly also, by simply shifting the frame outward from the backing, placing the sheet or poster behind the frame, against the backing, and' then returning the frame to position and securing it there. All marginal portions of the sheet or poster will be so held by the rearwardly projecting ribs of the members of the frame, that said sheet will be held firmly without liability of buckling or wrinkling. And it may be removed as easily as it was put in place.

Then the clamping rib is formed by edges of the frame, portions thereof may be serrated, especially the upper portion, as shown in Figs. 1 and 1, the teeth resulting from such serrated formation aiding in gripping the sheet firmly and immovably.
