ADVERTISING DEVICE.
Speccaton of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 10, 1909.
Application filed December 14, 1908. Serial No. 467,499.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID J. VVHITAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Council Bluffs, in the county of Pottawattam'ie and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Advertising Device, of which the following is a specification.
lt is the object of the present invention to provide a sign having an improved frame structure, the structure being such as to per mit of the ready insertion or removalof a sign sheet without dismounting the sign frame.
It is also an object of the linvention to greatly simplify the general construction of sign frames and to render the same more durable but less expensive to manufacture, the frame proper being formed from a single sheet of metal having its edge portions so folded as to form sign sheet receiving flanges and upon certain of the flanges, there are provided devices for engaging frictionally with the edges of the sign sheet so as to hold the same firmly in position.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts shown. in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sign constructed in accordance with the present invention, Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken in a plane between the upper and lower edges thereof, and through one end only, Fig. 3 is a detail vertical sectional view taken in a plane with one of the sign sheet holding devices, and Fig. l is a horizontal sectional view in detail but taken in a plane above that of Fig. 2.
The sign embodied in the invention comprises a frame and a sign sheet which is removably supported within the frame, and the frame is formed from a sheet 5 of metal which is cut at its corners and has its edge portions retrorsely folded to form sign sheet retainingflanges. More specifically speaking, the edge portions of the plate 5 `after the plate has been properly cut at its corners, are folded back upon themselves as at 6 and the two-ply flange thus formed is folded down upon one face of the plate 5 as indicated by the numeral 7, the extreme edge portion of each of the flanges 6 being. bent as indicated at 8 at the time of folding down the complete ange. The flanges at the ends of the plate 5 are folded down subsequent to the folding of the flanges at the upper and lower edges of the plate so that when the flanges at the ends of the plate are so folded, they are held, by the thickness of the flanges at the upper and lower edges of the plate, in spaced relation to the said plate, the flanges at the upper and lower edges of the plate bearing directly against the front face of the said plate.
As clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing, the plate 5 is formed, preferably adjacent each end, with an opening 9 through which is passed a screw or other suitable fastening device 10 for securing the sign frame upon a board or other suitable sup'- port 11, and as will be observed from au inspection of the said ligure, the material surrounding the opening is struck up as at 12 so that the head of the screw or other fastening device l() will be flush with thel face of the plate 5 and will not cause the sign sheet, which is to be supported upon the said face of the plate in a manner to be presently described, to bulge.
1n arranging the sign sheet, which is indicated by the numeral 18, the end portions of the sheet are inserted between the flanges at the ends of the plate 5 and the plate itself as is clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. The sign sheet 13 is of such height that its edges will register or substantially register with the opposed edges of the flanges at the upper and lower edges of the plate 5.
As heretofore stated, there are provided upon the upper and lower anges, means for holding the sign sheet in centered position upon the plate 5, and this means is embodied in a strip 14- of sheet metal which is bent at one end as at 15 for engagement over the flange and the edge of the plate 5 and this strip is bent adjacent its other end as at 1G to engage between the flange and the plate 5 and to bear at its bend frictionally against the edge of the sheet 13 as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. Itl will be observed from an inspection of Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings that the sheet holding members 14 may be slid or adjusted along the length of the flange upon which they are mounted and that one or several of these members may be lprovided upon each flange seas to engage the sign sheet at one or more points depending of course principally upon its length. Y
From the foregoing description of the invention it will be seen that there is provided a sign frame of such construction that a sign sheet may be readily placed therein or removed therefrom for the substitution of a sheet containing differentv display matter, and it Will further be understood that the sign is very inexpensive to manufacture and that the sign sheet may be applied thereto or removed'therefrom Without dismounting the sign frame.
lVhat isclaimed is l, A device of the class described comprising a plate having a sign sheet retaining flange, and means engaged With the flange and extending'- over the edge of the plate for frictionally holding a sign sheet in adjusted positions.
2. A device of the class described comprising a plate having a sign sheet retaining flange at the edge thereof, a sign sheet having edge portions engaged between opposite ones of said flanges and edges registering With the corresponding edges of the other flanges, and means engaged upon each of the last mentioned flanges and with the last mentioned edges of the sign sheet for holding said sign sheet in position.
A device of the class described comprising a plate having a sign sheet retaining flange at the edge thereof, an oppositely located pair of such flanges being spaced from the plate and the upper flanges bearing against the plate, a sign sheet havingedge portions engaged between tlie first mentioned flanges and the said plate, and edges, registering With the corresponding edges of the other flanges, and means engaged upon the last mentioned flanges and with the last mentioned edges of the sign sheet for holding the said sign sheet in position.
4l. A device of the class described comprising a plate having a sign sheet retaining flange at each edge thereof, a sign sheet ha ing edge portions engaged between opposite ones of the said flanges, and edges registering with the corresponding edges of the other flanges, and means adjustably engaged upon each of the last mentioned flanges and with the last mentioned edges of the sign sheet for holding the said sign sheet in position.
5. device of the class described comprising a plate having a sign sheet retaining flange at each edge thereof, a sign sheet having edge portions engaged between opposite ones of such flanges and edges registering with the opposed edges of the other flanges, and means engaged upon each of the last mentioned flanges and adjustable longitudinally thereof for engaging and holding the said sign sheet in position between the said last mentioned flanges.
I n testimonj)7 that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two` witnesses.
