JOHN SZUMLINSKI, OF AMSTERDAM, NEW YORK.
PUZZLE-BOX.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN SzUMLiNsxI, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Amsterdam, in the county of Montgomery and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Puzzle-Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to puzzle boxes and similar receptacles, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a box with a lid having a novel lock that is concealed and cannot be quickly opened except by a person familiar with the construction of the box.
A further object of this invention is to provide a box or receptacle with a pivoted two-part lid that can be easily and quickly locked or unlocked by a person familiar with the construction of the lock and the box.
\Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein like numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the box partly broken away and partly in section, showing the lid of the box in a closed and locked position, Fig. 2 is a plan of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the box showing the lid in a locked position, Fig. 4 is a similar view showing a portion of the lid shifted, Fig. 5 is a similar view showing a further adjustment of the lid of the box, and Fig. 6 is a plan of a port-ion of the lid of the box.
A box or receptacle in accordance with this invention comprises an oblong body 1 having rounded ends 2. The body 1, at one end thereof, is provided with a cavity or recess 3 adapted to contain jewelry or other matter. The top of the body 1, adjacent to the recess 3, is provided with a central dovetailed tongue 4 for a purpose that will presently appear. The opposite end of the body 1 has the top thereof provided with a recess 5 and movably connected to the top of said body by a pin or rivet 6 is a lid 7. One end of the lid is enlarged, as at 8 and provided with a dove-tailed groove 9 to receive the tongue 4. The enlarged end of the lid is Specification of Letters Patent.

beveled, as at 10 to receive the beveled edge 11 of a lid member 12. The lid member 12 is movably retained upon the lid .7 by the pin or rivet 6, said pin or rivet extending through a slot 13 provided therefor in the lid 7. The lid 7 is provided with a transverse opening 14 adapted to register with the recess 5, and the inner side of the lid member 12 has a pocket 15 adapted to register with the opening 14 and the recess 5. Movably arranged within the recess 5 and the opening 14 is a locking block 16 adapted to enter the pocket 15 of the lid member 12, when the box is inverted.
The lid of the box is shown in a locked position in Fig. 1 of the drawing, and the in one direction, but the lid 7 cannot be opened as long as the box is retained in an upright position.
To open the lid of the box, it is necessary that the lid member 12 be in a closed position. The box is then inverted whereby the locking block 16 will drop into the pocket 15 of the lid member 12, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing. The lid member 12 is then swung upon its pivot to move the pocket 15 out of alinement with the opening 14, as shown in Fig. 4, it being preferable to swing the lid member into longitudinal alinement with the box, thus providing suflicient clearance for a movement of the lid 7. The lid 7 is now shifted longitudinally of the body 1, out of engagement with the tongue 4, as shown in Fig. 5, the length of the slot 13 providing sufficient clearance for the pin or rivet 6. After the enlarged end of the lid has been moved out of engagement with the tongue 4, the lid can be swung to one side of the body 1, thereby permitting of easy access being had to the cavity or recess 3.
From the foregoing it will be observed that I have resorted to the use of a gravity locking block that is shiftably arranged to shift within the box, whereby when the box is properly manipulated, the lid thereof can be locked or unlocked. As the gravity looking block is concealed, it is practically impossible for the box to be opened, without destroying the same, except by a person familiar with its construction.
The box can be made of light and durable wood, of various sizes, and suitably ornamented to present a neat and attractive appearance.
lid member 12 can be swung upon the lid 7 hat I claim is I I A box of the type described, comprising a body having a cavity formed therein, a dove-tailed tongue carried by the top of said body at one end thereof, the opposite end of said body having a recess formed therein, a lid having one end thereof slotted and pivotally mounted upon said body adjacent to the recess thereof, said lid having one end thereof enlarged to provide a dove-tailed groove to receive the tongue of said body, said lid having an opening formed therein adapted to register with the recess of said body, alid member pivotally supported upon said lid by the same pivot means of said lid, said lid member having one end thereof beveled to engage the enlargement of said lid and the opposite end thereof provided with a pocket adapted to register with the opening of said lid and the recess of said body, and a gravitv lockin block arranged within the opening of said lid and the recess of said body for locking said lid in a closed position, said block being of less length than the depth of said pocket of the lid member and adapted to enter said pocket of said lid member, whereby said lid member can be adjusted to move said block out of registration With the opening of said lid to permit of said lid being longitudinally shifted upon said body and swung to an open position.
In testimony whereof I atfiX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
