[N VEN T OR I F A llarney DAVID C. SMITH,
OF FORT WORTH, TEXAS.
CONTROLLER ATTACHMENT FOR LETTERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 6, 1912.
Application filed May 9, 1911. Serial No. 626,109.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID C. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort forth, in the county of Tarrant and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Controller Attachments for Levers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in controlling devices for attachment to levers for manipulating valves of various kinds and the object in view is to produce a simple and eflicient device of this nature so arranged that it may be adjusted to bring the handle in the same relative position with reference to the operator.
The invention comprises various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the application of my invention to a lever. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view, and Fig. 3 is an edge view.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a handle having a screw B fixed to the end thereof.
C designates a disk which, in the present instance, is made semi-circular shape and is provided with a clamping member D held thereto by means of bolts E which pass through registering apertures in the disk and lugs D which project from the inner end of the clamping member. Nuts are mounted upon said bolts and afford means for securely holding the clamping. member to the disk. Said clamping member is adapted to receive the upper end of a lever H and the upper surface of the disk has a marking, designated by letter J, which indicates the position which is directly over the end of the clamp to show where the lever is positioned.
The convexed marginal edge of the disk is preferably downwardly inclined as at N and a yoke, designated by letter K, has two arms K spaced apart, said yoke being pivotally mounted upon a bolt G having an eye Gr through which a clamping bolt I passes and jam nuts are mounted upon the threaded portion of said eye bolt adapted to bear one against each face of the yoke.
Each arm of the yoke K is bent at right angles at K and the downwardly extending portions are bent to form hooks K which engage underneath the inclined edges of the disk. The screw which is carried by said handle has a contracted end 0 which is swiveled in a circular outlined plate Q, which is adapted to rest upon the upper surface of said disk. A nut, designated by letter T, has a recess T formed in its upper surface of a width sufiiciently wide to receive the two arms of the yoke. A ring or ferrule, designated by letter S, is mounted upon the handle and its upper end is flush with the end of the handle and adapted to bear against the upper surfaces of said arms and, when the handle and screw carried thereby are turned in one direction, the frictional arms of the yoke will be gripped in the manner shown so as to hold the latter in a fixed relation relative to the disk. By loosening the handle, the yoke may swing to different positions so that the handle may be brought either in alinement with the lever or at one side thereof, as may be desired.
By the provision of a controlling device as shown and described, it will be noted that a simple and eflicient means is afforded whereby the handle for the operation of a lever may be always held in the same relative position to the operator regardless of the position of the lever.
'VVhat I claim to be new is 1. A controlling device for levers comprising a clamp for attachment to a lever, a disk fitted to the clamping member, a yoke pivotally mounted upon the clamping member and adapted to engage the disk, a handle having a threaded portion, a plate swiveled to the end of the screw and bearing against the disk, and a nut upon the screw and adapted to bear against the yoke as the handle is turned.
2. A controlling device for levers comprising a clamp for attachment to a lever, a disk fitted to the clamping member, a yoke pivotally connected to the clamping member and disk, a handle, a screw carried thereby, a plate in which an unthreaded end of the screw is swiveled and which plate is adaptedto bear against the disk, a nut yoke pivotally mounted upon said eye bolt and having arms engaging the edge of the disk, a handle, a screw carried by the latter and passing between said arms, a plate in Topie's of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
which an unthreaded end of the screw is swiveled and adapted to contact with the 15 upper face of the disk, a nut having a threaded aperture for the reception of said screw, the face of the nut recessed to receive said arms.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my 20 signature in the presence of two witnesses.
DAVID C. SMITH.
