To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER G. BLooR, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have inv-ented new and useful Improvements in Handles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to handles and particularly to one adapted for use in connection with controllers of electric cars, and the object in view' is to provide novel and effective means for holding the handle rigidly to the post of the controller and to further provide means whereby the postengaged clamping means of the handle can be taken up to accommodate any wear on the post.
In the drawing, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views Figure l is a side elevation of my improved handle. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the movable member of the clamp portion of the handle. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the handle. Fig. 4 is a detail plan view of a portion of the handle showing the movable clamp member removed. Fig. 5 is a top plan view of a portion of a handle showing a slightly modified form of my invention. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective View of the movable clamp member. Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of the eccentric.
My improved handle as shown particularly in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive of the drawing, consists of a main body 1 upon which is formed an upwardly and outwardly eX- tending handle-receiving arm 2. The main body portion 1 of the handle is provided with an arcuate head 3 whose inner surface is formed to provide angular faces 4 and 5. |The main body of the handle is formed with a horizontally disposed recess 6 in which the correspondingly formed portion 7 of -a movable clamp member 8 is disposed.
The member 8 is of arcuate form and it is provided with angularly disposed inner faces 9 and 10 which are associated with respect to the faces 4 and 5 of the head 3 to engage therewith the faces of vertical surfaces of the controlling post, (not shown). The faces 4 and 5 of the head 3 are coeXtensive in length with the faces 9 and 10 of the member 8 so that these faces may be brought to bear throughout their entire length with the controlling post, insuring a positive grip thereagainst. The portion 7 of the movable clamp member is formed with an exteriorly threaded stud 11 which extends through the head 3. The stud 11 has engaged therewith a clamping nut 12 which may be operated to cause the movable member to move as desired into or out of engagement with the post. The construction of the lever as herein described is extremely simple and in practice, it will be understood that upon adjustment of the clamping nut 12 the respective parts of the lever will be drawn toward each other to cause their angular faces to be effectively frictionally engaged with the post. The construction provides means whereby upon wear of the post the lever can be rigidly applied thereto and held against rotation irrespective of that of the controlling post.
In the form of my invention shown in Figs. 5 to 7 inclusive, the movable clamp member 13 is formed with a stud 14 which is perforated at 15 for the reception of a post 16. An eccentric handle 16 is provided with spaced disks 17 which are provided with alining apertures for engaging the ends of the post 1G, the said disks being suitably spaced from each other to straddle the rectangular stud 14. The form just described is such that the movable member can be actuated in a manner similar to that described in the preferred form of my invention. It will be understood that when the lever 16 has been actuated to assume the position shown in Fig. 5 the disks 17 will be frictionally engaged with the outer surface of the head 18 to throw the movable cla-mp member toward the head as will be appreciated. In reverse movement of the lever 16 the movable clamp member will be moved in an opposite direction to that just named.
