Description
W. T. WELLMAN.
COMBINED FLOOR SET, NAIL SET, AND NAIL SHIELD.
APPLIGAT IIIIII 21) FEB. 21, 1911.

WILLIAM T. WELLMAN, OF LAWRENCE, KANSAS.
COMBINED FLOOR-SET, NAIL-SET, AND NAIL-SHIELD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 21, 1911.
Patented Feb. 6, 1912.
Serial No. 609,915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lVILLIAM T. VVELL- MAN, -a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Lawrence, in the county of Douglas and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Floor-Sets, Nail-Sets, and Nail-Shields, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined floor set, nail set and nail shield, the object of the invention being to provide an im plement for facilitating the laying of floors and for also facilitating an accurate set and driving of the nail to its work, and for further constructing the implement so as to protect the floor during the driving operation of the nail.
In the drawing, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views-:Figure 1 is a section through the implement showing the application of the same for setting a floor, a portion of the floor being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the implement.
The implement comprises a horizontally disposed supporting plate or shield 1 which is formed with an extension 2, the latter supporting an integral socket member 3 which is disposed substantially at an obtuse angle with respect to the plate 1. A suitable handle 1 has its tang portion 5 fitted in the socket 3 and held therein through the provision of the ordinary well known wedge or retaining device 6.
At the opposite end, the plate 1 is formed exteriorly to present a beveled striking surface 7, the inner portion of the said surface being constructed to provide a substantially V-rim 8 which fits the upper rabbet on the tongue portion of the floor A, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The striking surface is formed with nail setting passages 9 which open at their inner ends directly onto the rib 8 so that when the implement is operatively associated with the flooring the passages will be disposed in position to permit of the effective drive of the nails, a nail B being shown in Fig. 1 for the purpose of clearness. In connection with the implement described, I preferably employ a punch or driving element 10 which is provided at one end with a reduced stem portion 11 which is adapted to contact with the head of the nail and to slidably fit the passages 9 in the striking face of the implement. In this manner the nail can .be entirely driven into the flooring without removing my improved implement.
The implement is provided with a setting face 12 which is formed on the inner surface of the depending portion 13, the latter being formed preferably, integrally with the striking face portion of the implement and being arranged with respect thereto so as to extend downwardly against the side of the tongue of the flooring, as shown in Fig.1.
When the implement is operatively associated with the flooring the plate 1 is dis posed immediately above the flooring so as to wholly contact with the upper surface thereof, the rib 8 fitting the upper rabbet on the tongued edge of the flooring and arranged with respect thereto so as to permit of the effective driving operation of the nail as hereinbefore described. of the implement the striking face 7 and the portion 13 may be struck with a mallet, hammer or any suitable driving tool so as to force the tongue and groove portions of the adjacent flooring sections into operative engagement or association with each other.
I claim:
1. A floor set comprising a plate including a major horizontally disposed portion, a handle secured to said portion, a substantially V-rib on the underside of the plate adapted to fit against the upper face of the tongue of the flooring, the said plate having a beveled striking surface, the rib having a nail-guiding passage therein which opens at its outer end onto the said striking surface, and a depending setting face formed integral with the rib and adapted to be extended against the outer edge of the tongue of the flooring.
2. A floor set comprising a horizontally disposed plate, a socket formed integral with said plate and at the rear thereof and at an obtuse angle thereto, a V-rib formed In this position integral ith said plate on its under surface In testimony whereof I affix my signaand at the forward edge thereof, a dependture in presence of two witnesses.
ing setting face formed integral With the rib and adapted to engage the outer edge 0f 17 J t 1 i r the tongue of the flooring, a beveled strik- ILLIAM DLLMAIM ing surface formed on the upper surface of \Vitnesses:
said plate and in advance of said V-rib, and ALBERT E. BLAIR,
a handle fitting said socket. I HENRY H. ASHER.
