ERNEST HAKANSON, OF STOGKBRIDGE, MICHIGAN.
FLOOR-SET.
Application filed August 21, 1916.
To all whom it may concern: Y
Be it known that. I. Ennns'r HnKaNsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stockbridge, in the county of Ingham, in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Floor Sets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in floor sets, and an object of the invention is to provide a simple, efficicnt and durable device of this character which can readily be applied to a floor joist to force a series of boards, laid upon the joist, together for the purpose of nailing to form a floor. With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described in this specification, pointed out in the appended claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawing which forms a part of the specification and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my device showing its application.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the preferred form of the device.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one form of clamping bar employed.
Fig. 4: is a perspective view of the preferred form of clamping bar.
Like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The reference numeral 1 denotes flooring boards and 2 a joist to which they are to be nailed in the usual or customary manner. To facilitate the operation of setting the flooring boards I provide a clamping bar which may be of the form shown in Figs. 1
and 3 of the drawing and designated by the numeral 3, or it may be of the form shown in Figs. 2 and at of the drawing and designated by the reference numeral 4. The bar 3 is formed with a curved and pointed extremity 5 and with a relatively short nonpointed extremity 6 which meetsthe main portion of the bar at right angles, and said bar end 6 is provided with the spur 7. The bar a is formed with curved pointed extremity 5 and with a spur 7 carried by its main body portion.
copies of this patent may be obtained for Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 14, 1918.
Serial No. 116,088.
A clamping bar 3 is capable of engagement with joists of a limited thickness while the bar t is capable of engagement with any joist. In connection with my clamping bar I provide a wedge 8 which may be grooved along one lateral face if the flooring boards are formed with mortise'and tenon. My clamping bar 3 is applied to the top or tread of the joist with the non-pointed ex tremity or heel 6 adjacent one lateral face of the oist. The workman then strikes the heel 6 with a hammer and so drives the spur into the lateral face of the joist. He now forces the wedge, small end first, between the bar 3 and the flooring board to be set thus forcing the board away from the said bar and the pointed end 5 of the bar into the joist and so setting the board.
The bar 4 is applied to the tread surface of the joist with its curved end projected beyond the joist. A blow is then struck the bar driving the spur 7 into the tread of the joist. The wedge 8 is now placed between the bar 4. and board being set and driven toward the spur-end of the bar as previously described whereby the board is set. Each time a flooring board is set the wedge 8 is driven out of engagement therewith and the bar 3 or 4 reset and the operation repeated for the next board.
What is claimed is In a floor set, a clamping bar having a straight body portion terminating at one end in a heel, a curved pointed toe formed at the opposite end of said straight body portion, means carried by said heel whereby said straight body portion may be fulcrumed to the topmost surface of the work, and a wedge for cooperation with the body portion of the clamping bar.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ERNEST HAKANSON.
