SKETCH-TABLET HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 17, 1910. Serial No. 550,088. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern 4 Be it known that I, ALEXANDER Soor'r, of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Sketch-Tablet Holders, where'- of the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
It is the object of my invention to provide a device which will enable an artist to support a sketch tablet on one hand and arm, engaged by the thumb in the same way that a palette is held; to facilitate sketching where it is impossible or difiicult to use an easel.
As hereinafter described, my invention includes a thumb ring carrying an adjustable frame having members extending to the edge of the tablet, with adjustable end clamps to detachably engage the same. Said frame members are ofiset so as to afford room for a thumb between the top of said ring and the back of the tablet, and, they conveniently include longitudinally adjustable sections, so that the effective length thereof may be varied in accordance with the dimensions of the tablet which is to be held.
My invention includes the various novel features of construction and arrangement hereinafter more definitely specified.
In the drawing :Figure I is a plan view of a holder conveniently embodying my invention, applied to a tablet. Fig. II is a side view of said holder and tablet. Fig. III is a plan view showing a modified form of my invention. Fig. IV is a side view of the holder and tablet indicated in Fig. III.
In said Figs. I and II; the thumb ring 1 is provided with sleeves 2, arranged to slide upon the parallel frame bars 3 which are offset at their middle portions so as to afford room for a thumb between the top. of said ring and the back of the tablet 4. Said frame members 3 conveniently include the separable sections 5 which are longitudinally adjustable thereon but may be rigidly connected therewith by the set screws 6 so that the effective length of said frame members may be varied in accordance with the size of the tablet to be held. Said members carry the clamps 7 at their outer ends provided with the set screws 8 to detachably engage the edges of the tablet.
The form of my invention described is advantageous in that it enables the operator to shift the supporting ring with respect to the area of the tablet in accordance with the Patented Jan. 30,1912.
size of the latter, to enable 'the operator to I I support and manipulate the tablet with the greatest facility. However, a simplified form of my invention in which the thumb ring is not adjustable as above described is shown in Fig. III, wherein the thumb ring 9 is rigidly connected with the frame bar 1.0 which is offset therefrom so as to afford room for the thumb between the top of said ring and the back of the tablet 11. Said frame member 10, has the extensible section 12 which is longitudinally adjustable thereon but may be rigidly connected therewith by the set screw 13 so that the effective length of said member may be varied in accordance with the dimensions of the tablet to be held. Said section 12 has the clamp let at its outer end provided with the set screw 15 to detachably engage the tablet. Said frame also includes the two frame bars 16 which are offset from said ring 9 at the same level as said frame member 10 and are provided at their outer ends with the clamps l7 and set screws 18 to detachably engage the tablet. It may be observed that the pivots 19 of said frame members 16 are so located that their vertical portions 20 encounter the edges of said ring 9 so as to limit their movement of extension, but, said members-16 may be swung on said pivots toward the bar 10 and the section 12 may be retracted, when it is desired to pack the device for transportation.
It is to be understood that I do not desire to limit myself to the precise details of construction and arrangement herein set forth, as various modifications may be made therein without departing from the essential fea.- tures of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim 1. In a sketch tablet holder, the combination with a frame including members having clamping means at their ends arranged to detachably engage the edges of a tablet; of a thumb ring connected with said frame, extending in a plane parallel with said frame members but offset therefrom to such an extent as to afford space for a thumb between said ring and the back of the tablet.
2. In a sketch tablet holder, the combination with a frameincluding parallel bars having tablet engaging means at their ends and having their middle portions offset with respectto their ends; of a thumb ring longitudinally adjustable on the middle portions of said bars.
In a sketch tablet holder, the combination with a thumb ring; of a frame carried by said ring including parallel bars on which said ring is longitudinally adjustable; said bars including longitudinally extensible sections; means detachably con necting said entensible sections with the other members of said bars; and means on said frame members arranged to detachably clamp a tablet.
d. In a sketch tablet holder the combination with a thumb ring 3 of a frame carried by said ring including extensible parallel bars on which said ring is arranged to slide; and, means carried by said bars arranged to detaehably clamp a tablet.
In a sketch tablet holder, the combination With a frame including members having clamping means at their ends arranged to detachably engage the edges of a tablet; of a thumb ring permanently connected With said frame but adjustable relatively to said clamping means.
6. In a sketch tablet holder, the combination with a frame including members having clamping means at their ends arranged to detachably engage the edges of a tablet; of a thumb ring permanently connected With said frame.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name at Philadelphia, Pennsyl- 'ania, this seventh day of March, 1910.
