INVENTOR J0 EMCZZ Jfi'aus EDWARD L. KRAUS, OF SLATINGTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
FOLDING-DESK BLACKTBOARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 23, 1912.
Application filed March 1, 1911. Serial No. 611,643.
To all whom "it may concern:
' Be it known that I, EDWARD L. KRAUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Slatington, county of Lehigh, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding-Desk Blackboards, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
The invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in folding desk blackboards and has for an object to provide a pivoted frame having a writing surface which can be easily and quickly adjusted to an angle suitable to the purposes of the user.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide pivoted arms adapted to support the frame at any angle desired and to hold the same in closed position relative to the base.
A further object of the invention is to provide compartments between the base and the frame, when the latter is in closed position, in which may be placed and carried the articles ordinarily used in connection with blackboards and slates.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.
In the drawing-Figure l is a perspective view of my improved form of folding desk blackboard; Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof showing the frame in relatively different raised positions; and Fig. 3 is a top plan view in folded position with section broken away.
Like numerals of reference refer to like parts in the several figures of the drawing.
In the drawing, 1 indicates a base of any desired construction and configuration having end pieces 2 between which, and adjacent one end thereof, is pivotally mounted as at 3, (Fig. 3) a frame 4t having a writing surface of ordinary construction. The frame is adapted to be folded upon the base '1 and between the end pieces 2 by means of its pivotal mounting thereto, and is also adapted to be raised to any desired angle, as shown in Fig. 2, and to be secured in such position by means of arms 5 pivotally mounted upon the end pieces 2 as at 6. The arms are connected together by a tierod 7, passing through apertures in the outer ends of said arms as at 8, said tie-rod having a threaded end 9 on which works a thumb-nut 10.
The end pieces 2 are slotted, as at 11, to receive the reduced portions of the arms 5, to permit said arms to be readily adjusted to any desired angle, as shown in Fig. 2, and to be thrown into longitudinal alinement with the end pieces to hold the frame 4 in folded position as-shown in Fig. 3. Upon the base are secured, in any desired manner, parallel separated strips 12 running lengthwise of the base, which are adapted to form a supporting surface for the frame when the latter is in folded position. The space between the strips 12 forms a compartment 13 in which may be placed and carried the articles ordinarily used in connection with blackboards and slates.
It will, therefore, be seen that my invention presents a very simple, eflic'ient and economically constructed form of folding desk blackboard or slate, particularly applicable for use in schools and the like, due to its compactness in form when folded, thereby rendering its removal from one place to another easily accomplished.
Having described my invention and set forth its merits, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A device of the kind described consisting of a base, end pieces having slots at one end secured to said base, a frame pivotally mounted between, said end pieces adjacent one end, and arms pivotally mounted in the slots of said end pieces, said arms carrying a tie-rod for clamping said arms against said frame.
2. A device of the kind described comprising a base having end pieces secured thereto, strips secured on said base between said end pieces for forming a compartment, a frame carrying a writing surface pivotally mounted between said end pieces adjacent one end and adapted to close said compartment when folded between said end pieces, arms pivoted upon said end pieces having apertured free ends, and a tie-rod loosely mounted in said apertures having a nut for clamping said arms against said frame for holding said frame in a set-up or closed position.
3. A device of the kind described comprising a base having end pieces secured thereon, strips secured on said base between said end pieces for forming a compartment,
a frame carrying a writing surface pivotally mounted on the inner faces of said end pieces adjacent one end and adapted to rest on said strips and close said compartment When folded between said end pieces, arms pivotaily mounted upon said end pieces at their opposite ends having apertured free ends, a rod passing through said apertures having a threaded end, and a nut mounted on said threaded end against the side edges 10 of said frame for holding the frame in a set-up or closed position between said arms.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
