Description

dilated time @wat Gemine.
-JOHN W. TUTTLE, 0F NEWTON CORNER; MASSACHUSETTS.
Leners Pfam: No. 101,546, daalt Aja-'iz 5, 1870.
The Schedule referred .to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same. e
To all persons to whom these presents may come:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. Tur'inn, of Newton Corner, of the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a'new and useful Improvement in Paper or Pasteboard Packing-Boxes; and do hereby declare the same to be described as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 denotes a longitudinal section of a packing-box made in accordance with my invention.
.Figure is such a section of its cover; and
Figure 3 is such a section of the body.
The said cover is shown at A, and the body or rest of the box at B.
The object or purpose of my additions to the columon pasteboard packing-box is to dispense with the employment of strings, fastenings, or wrappers, such as ordinarily used or are commonly employed by packers orothers for confining the covers to the bodies of packing-boxes, and to provide a packingbox having a over elastic or flexible, and readily, by its inherent elasticity' and other means, as hereinafter described, kept in place on the body qf the box under most, if not all ordinary circumstances, particularly during transportation ofthe box from place to place.
In carrying out my invention, I combine with the opposite ends or sides or corners of the cover A, shoulders or ledges a a, and with the corresponding opposite ends or sides o1' corners of the body other such shoulders or ledges, b b, those of the cover and body being arranged with reference to each other, and the cover and body, in manner as represented in the drawings, in order that when the cover dis in place on the body, the ledges of the former may project underneath those of the latter, and thus serve therewith to hold the cover on the body.
The cover should be sufciently flexible or elastic to enable it to be sepa-rated from the body by raising up either or each end of the cover with a moderate force; the cover, after having been pressed down upon the body, collapsing by its inherent elasticity, so as to carry its ledges or shoulders underneath those of the body.
Common pasteboard packing-boxes,- as heretofore made and as used by manufacturers, or in stores or elsewhere for the package or preservation of small wares or light articles of merchandise, are very liable to have their covers displaced from the bodies. As a consequence, this necessitates the employment of strings or other fastenings going wholly or partially around the boxes, such methods of conlining the covers in place being oftentimes expensive and attendant with loss of time and material, which by my invention are saved; and, furthermore, my invention saves the labor and time required for relieving the covers of' such means or methods of retaining them in place, and is a valuable and very important improvement, as, for all ordinary purposes, the cover will be kept in place without the necessity of being wrapped or -tied dowuiupon the body.
I claim as my invention- Thenew or improved manufacture or pasteboard packing-box, made-with'the 'shoulder-pieces-or ledges, arranged and combined with its 'cover and body, in' manner and to operate therewith, substantially as and' for the purpose as hereinbefore explained.
Witnesses: JOHN W. TUTTLE.
