YLetters Patent N o. 98,609, datedr.anuary 4 1870,
IMPROVEMENT IN EGG-BOXES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part ox' the same.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, J. D. MICHAEL, of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore, and State of Maryland, have .invented a new and vvimproved Egg-Box; and I do hereby-declarethat the following is au full, clear, and exact desciiption thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specication.
This invention relates to improvement in boxes for transporting Ior packing eggs; and
It consists of a box, open at top and bottom, in which two boards are litted so as to be easily moved inor out,l and which may be secured at any point by means of pins passing through holes in the sides of the box. 'Ihe eggs are confined between said boards, and thus a receptacle is provided whereby they may not only be packed for transportation, butkept from decay by turning the box at suitable intervals.
Figure l isa longitudinal sectional elevation through a box constructed according to my improvement, and Figure 2 is a plan' View ofthe same. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. Itis well known that eggs keep much vbettei` and longer if frequently turned over, for if left lying on one side for any lengthof time, the yolk will settle or sink unt-il it reaches the she1l, the egg is then too stale for use, and will soon be rotten'. lf turned over every few days, the yolk will 'not reach the shell so` soon, and tbe egg will, consequently, keep a great deal longer. And. it is desirable to have boxes or other receptacles for them, whereby they can Abe readily turne'ever all together, whether the package be full or not.z It is a slow and tedious process to turn each separately in ya box, barrel, or other receptacle, .such as now used in gathering quantities together, as is the I case among produce-dealers. y
It is, therefore, desirable to providepacking-cases,
with means for separatingthem, when packing for shipment, into thin ,layers,\ to 'prevent damage by accumulation ot' Weight. l l
To accomplish these objects is the purpose of my invention, and this I do by the employment of boxes or cases A, with tops B and bottoms G, capable of i moving in and out within the side/s, and of attachment l at any point. w Y i :The mode which I have adopted of attachingaud holding the said tops and bottoms, or intervening boards or shelves, which I propose to introduce, as many as may be required for separating the eggs, consists in making rows of holes.D through the sides, near the ends, and as near togetherv as can well be, through which I pass small rods, E, either above and below the boards B4 C, or through them, by which I may readily adj ust andsecure them to any position.
' Between these boards, or bottoms and'tops, I arrange the eggs in theirlayers, and so as to be snugly confined, to prevent rattling or the effects of supeiiuoumf bent weight. A i
The sides ofthe boxes may have hand-holes, F, by which the bands may be applied when the tops are placed below the upper edges of the sides, for hand- :ling the boxes, for turning, or otherwise.
When accumulating eggs for market, a boardor shelf may be placed at about the centre of the box, and the days accumulation placed thereon. They may then be closed in by another board, and the box turned over for the next days accumulation, and so on till the box is full and ready for market.
These boards B G may be secured in any other pre- 'l fel-red way, and this I propose to do in any manner found best.
These boxes may also be used for packing fruit and.
other articles.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new,'and desire to secure by Letters Patentf l. The portablepackingfcase for eggs, consisting of the rectangular box A, opeuat top and bottom, and provided with the boards B and C, arranged to be moved up or down, and to be adjusted and secured at any point within it, as herein shown and described.
2. The mode of securing the boards A B within Athe boxes, by 'means of the pins or rods E, and the holes D, substantially as specied; y
J. D. MICHAEL.
Witnessesz.
