SHEET-STEEL KEG.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 31, 1908 Serial N o. 413 ,5591.
To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that 1, CHARLES S'ronLBERc, a citizen of the United States, reslding in Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sheet-Steel Kegs, of whichthe following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the construction of sheet steel kegs orfvessels for holding and shipment of white lead or other heavy materials.
My, invention consists in a sheet steel keg or vessel having a seamed body of slightly tapering form and provided with a counter sunk bottom head secured by an external double or folded seam to the body so that the bottom head, in connection with the an:
nular roll of the seam, will effectually stiffen site integral bail ear loops projecting through notches provided in the annular roll of the body, combined with a deep countersunk inside fitting friction cover which is furnished with an annular U- shaped rim that embraces the annular roll on the body, and which is provided with diametrically opposite notches to accommodate the bail ear loops, on the stiffening wire of the body, and the bail, and which ing lips adapted to be clenched or bent around or under the external roll on the body to lock the cover in place and hold it in efficient bracing and stiffening relation 'to or cooperation with the body.
The invention ,further conslsts in the.
novel construction of parts and devices and in the novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown and described and more particularly specified in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is acentral vertical sectional view of a sheet steel white lead keg or vessel embody-ingmy invention; Fig. 2 is a detail plan view;Fig1 3 is a detail partial elevation; Fig. 4 is a detail section through one ofthe cover hOldf ing lips; and Fig. 5 is a detail partial section on line 55 of Fig.3. 7
In the drawing A represents the sheet steel body of the vessel, the same having a folded'or lock side seam a, and being of drawing, so that the lower-end of onevessel with its external double seam which unites the bodyv to the bottom, may fitwithinthe countersunk cover of another similar vessel and thus enable the filled vessel to be nested,
stacked, or piled securely one on top of another, as'indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawing;
- B is the sheet steel countersunk bottom head ofthe vessel, the same having an an-.
Patented ane 3 191 2.-
nular flange or wall 6 fitting within the lower end of the body, and a seaming flange. btwhich is interfolded with the flange a at the lower end of the body into an external double seam a which securely unites the bottom head to the body, and also surrounds the lower end of theibody as a hoop or externalroll to brace and 'stitfenthe same.
' Thebody Aat its upper end is" furnished with an integral external annular roll a Which'embraces an annular stiffening-wire or rod (L The stiffening wire G isprovided at diametrically opposite points with inte-.
gral bail ear loops C ,'a-nd the external annular rolla on the body provided with diametrically opposite notches or cutaway port-ions a. to accommodate the bail ear loops or for them'to project through. T
D is the deep countersunk coverof the vessel. The countersunk wall 07 of, which vessel-and forms a tight friction fit-lthere' fits within the upper end or mouth of the.
with, so that the cover not. only serves as a I closure for the vessel butalso as an'efiicient brace and strengthening device for the upper end'of the body. The deep countersunk tight friction fit cover D is also provided with an annular U-sl1aped rim d which snugly fits and embraces the external annu lar roll a attthe upper end of the body. The;outer annular wall/cl of the inverted- U-shaped rim of the cover is also provided with a plurality of integral clenching lips (1 which are adapted to be bent or clenched. 7
.the cover in place and hold it securely in co: operative stiiiening and bracing relation with the uaperend of the body and itsex a under the external roll on the body to lock .ternal sti ening roll; The outer wall or flange d of the cover rim is also provided with diametrically opposite notches d to 55 slightly tapering form, as indicated inthe- I to accommodate the bail ear loops, a countersunk tight friction cover fitting within the mouth of the body and provided with an annular peripheral inverted U-shaped rim snugly engaging and superposed upon said external roll on the body, said U-shaped rim being provided with notches registering with the notches in the roll on the body to accommodate said bail ear loops of the stifiening wire, said U-shaped rim having also integral cover-holding lips located between the notches therein, said lips engaging with and vbent around the external roll on the body whereby the external roll on the body is strengthened to better hold and re tain the stitfening wire, substantially as specified.
2. A sheet metal vessel comprising a body having an external roll at its upper end, a stiffening wire within said roll surrounding the body and provided with diametrically disposed radially projecting integral bail ear loops, said external roll on the body hav- I ing notches therein to accommodate the bail ear loops, and a cover fitting within the mouth of the body and provided with an annular peripheral rim, said rim being pro vided with notches coinciding with the notches in the roll on the body, said rim fitting against and reinforcing said external roll on the body and the stiffening wire at each side of the bail ear, said rim of the cover having integral holding clips clenched under the external roll on the body at points spaced away from the bail ear, substantially as specified.
