SHEE T-S'IEEL KEG FOR WHITE LEAD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 13, 1909.
Application filed November 21, 1906. Serial No. 344,420.
a sheet metal keg of a simple, ellicient, strong and durable construction, capable of being cheaply manuiactured and which,
when filled with white lead or other heavy material, may be safely handled in the usual manner without danger of leakage or breakage, or of loosening or springing oil the cover in case the heavy ackage should, in falling from a height stri c upon its side, edge or corner.
My-invcntion consists in the means i employ to practically accomplish this object or result, as herein shown or described and more articularly specified in the claims.
In t 1e accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, Figure is a side elevation of a sheet metal keg for white lead embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section. Fig. 3 .is a top or plan View. Fig. 4 is a detail side elevation, showing the bail ear and cover holding clip, and Fig. 5 is a detail cross section on line 55 of ri 4'.
In my improved sheet metal keg the body of the vessel is composed 01' two seamless bilged or barrel-shaped body sections A and B, drawn or pressed to the 1((,!Uil'(-l.l shape,
the lower section, A, having an integral bottom a, and the upper section, B, having an inwardly and downwardly turned curved .llange b forming an annular friction. seat wall for the cover D. And the two body sectionsA B have at-their meeting ends, external or outwardly; projecting annular flanges a, b, folded together into an external lock scam a uniting the two sections at thc'middle of the body of the barrelshaped keg or vessel, the folded seam o uniting the two sections also constituting an external annular strengthening rib to The object of my invention is to provide l strengthen and stillen the vessel at its mei dlan line.
To further reii'iforce, strengthen andstillen the flat integral bottom head a of the vessel, and to internally brace and further support the lower end of the lower 00 section A of the body, it is n'ovided with a supplemental bracing and supporting disk O, engaged and held 'in place at its periphery by an annular bend or enlargement of at the lower end of the lower section A.
The cover 1) has a deep countersink l). therein, forming an annular inside litting friction seat wall or flange (1, snugly fitting and engaging the annular depending flange l) surrounding the central opening B in the upper end of the upper section B. The cover 1) also has an outer parallel annular flange (Z surrounding and embracing the upper end of the upper section, andsuugly litting the same. The inner and outer (hinges (Z d being united by a curved llange (Z and togcther forming an annular channel U-shaped in cross section, snugly embracing, inside and out, the upper end of the uppersection with its inwardly and downwardly curved 8o flange, which ilangc gives such upper end of the upper section a corresponding inverted U-shape in cross section. T he tight wodging fit cover thus serves not only as a closure for the open mouth of the vessel, but also as an internal brace and as an external band or hoop to brace, bind, stilien and strengthen the upper end of the upper body section.
To hold the cover in its snug tight braceacting and stiilening engagement with the upper end oi the body section, and to revent danger of the cover loosening or springing oil when the vessel is subjected at any. part to a heavy blow, the body is provided with combination cover holding clips and bail ears F F, each furnished with a lower end or shank portion flitting in a recess or depression I) with which the upper section B of the body is'provided, and each having at their upper ends a pair ol cover holding loo lips 'f and a bail engaging lip f irovided with a hole or eye f" to engage the cup {1 ol' the wire bail G. Each of tlnse combined cover holding clips and hail cars l" is prcterably secured to the upper section of the body by rivctsf The cover engaging lips f are clenched or bent down' over the upvery snugly and firmly in place.
,hammering or bending the lips back so that they do not overlap the cover, the cover may be readily removed by hammering against its outer annular flange-without injuring the again closed by reapplying the cover.
I claim:
vessel or the cover, so that the vessel can be 5 By simply 2 A bailed sheet steel keg for white lead having an upper open end and a downwardly curved flange at its upper open end,
a cover having an inner upwardly extending flange and an outer downwardly extending flange embracing the flanged mouth end of the keg, and combined bail ears and cover 1. A bailed sheet steel keg for n' hite lead having an upper open end and a downwardly curved flange at its upper open end, a cover having an inner upwardly extendlng flange and an outer downwardly extending flange embracing the flanged mouth end of the keg, and combined ball ears and cover holding clips-each formed with a shank portion attached to the keg, with a central out wardly bent bail ear, and at each side of the bail ear with upwardly and inwardly extend ing clips arranged to hook over and within 9 tially as set forth.
' the said inner flange of the cover, substanholding clips each formed with a shank portion attached to the keg, with a central bail ear, and at each side of the bail ear with upwardly extending clips arranged to hook over and within the said inner flange of the cover,
the body of the keg being formed with re- CHARLIIS WPOLLIHGRG. Witnesses:
