Be it known that I, ALFRED L. KRoNQUEs'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of lllinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receptacles, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the figures of reference marked thereon;
rlhe invention relates to new and useful improvements in receptacles, and more par-l ticularly to a metal container' having an open top which is closed by a cover after the contents have been placed in the container.
An object of the invention is to provide a container with a yclosure which may be quickly and very easily applied to the body portion of the container by very simple operating devices.
A further object of the invention is to provide a container wherein the cover is secured to the body portion of the cover by the deflecting of the flange `of the cover so as to contract or indent the side of the body ortion of the container. v
A still further object of the invention is to provide a container having a cylindrical body portion, the edge of which is reinforced or strengthened by the bending of the metal thereof, and wherein the cover is secured to the body portion .of the container by the bending of the cover flange intermediate its edges so as to cause the cover to indent or contract the side wall of the body portion of the container, along a line below the strengthened edge.

The invention consists broadly in a receptacle having a body portion which is preferably cylindrical in transverse cross section. Said body portion has its upper edge strengthened by the rolling of the metal forming the body portion of the container into an inturned bead or rib. The cover is formed with a central depressed portion and a depending flange, thus forming a pocket which is U-shaped in cross section adapted to fit over said inturned bead or strengthening rib on the body portion of rthe container. A suitable sealing material or packing may be placed in the upper portion of the pocket for causing a tight sealing of the can. Said depending flange on the cover is for the greater portion of its extent substantially vertical. rlhe extreme lower edge portion, however, is bent outwardly. The parts so constructed` are assembled and after the cover has been placed on the body portion of the container, the outwardly turned portion ofthe flange is engaged by suitable devices and folded upwardly and then the upwardly folded portion of thev flange, to-A gether with the lower part of the flange above the bend therein, is crowded or delected inwardly so as to indent or contract the vertical side wall of the can body along a line directly beneath the strengthening bead on the vertical wall, and thus the cover istightly secured to the body portion of the container.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, I have shown my invention as applied to a container consisting of a cylindrical body portion 1 to which is attached a bottom portion 2 by double seaming, soldering or any other suitable means. The body portion ofthe container is open at the top. Said body portion is preferably cylindrical in cross section, and at the extreme upper edge of the body portion, the side wall `is rolled into a bead 3. This bead may be a tight roll or a comparatively loose roll such as is sometimes referred to as a false wire, or it may be bent inl other ways in order to strengthen the upper ed e of the body portion of the container. aid container is preferably made of sheet metal, although it will be obvious The open top of the container is closed by a cover 4. Said cover has a central depression forming a vertical wall 5, and a depending ange which also provides a substantially vertical wall 6, the lower edge portion 7 of which is turned outwardly at an angle to the vertical wall 6. These vertical walls and 6 are, of course, joined by the metal of the cover forming the U-shaped pocket, in the upper portion of which may e placed a suitable sealing material 8.
llt is noted that the vertical side wall 9 of the body portion l is substantially straight from 'the bead 3 thereof to the bottom of the container, and particularly in the region directly beneath the strengthening bead'3. When the cover is placed on the body portion of the cover, the vertical wall 5 of the cover engages the innerface of the bead 3 and the vertical wall 6 of the cover engages the outer face or outer wall of the body portion of the container. The bead 3 substantially closes the U-shaped pocket and confines the sealing material 8 so that when` the cover is crowded 'on to the container body, the sealing material willinake a tight joint between the cover and container body.l The cover is held pressed on to the container body, and while so seated, the out-turned` portion 7 of the ange is bent upwardly to theposition shown in Fig. 4, and this, to-
gether with the immediate part of thevertical portion 6 of the flange on the cover directly above the kbend in the flange are forced or deflected inwardly Jindenting the side wall of the container body as indicated at 10 in Fig. 4. This indenting or contracting of the container body along a line di-` `rectly beneath the strengthening bead 3,
draws the cover tightly down on to the bead 3 and firmly holds the` cover on the container body. The folding up of the metal in the iange reinorces the lower edge of the' flange and makes a very strong grip of the cover on the container body.
While l have shown the edge of the flange as folded up during the securing of the cover to the container body, it will be obvious that the invention, so far as the container is concerned, resides in strengthening the lower edge of the ange, either by bending while closing or before closing, and delecting the strengthened thickened edge for indenting line directly beneath the'bead or strengthenor contracting the container body along a ing upper edge of the container bodyfor securing the cover tothe container body.
