The invention relates to new and useful improvements in easy opening containers, and more particularly to the features of construction that have to do with the reclosure of E the container after the end or cover has been released by tearing away a rip strip.

An object of the invention is to provide a container wherein a reclosure collar is formed by a folding of the body wall, which reclosure collar is rigidly attached to and depends from the end after it is released by tearing away the rip strip, and wherein said fold forming the reclosure collar is so disposed that the body wall may be provided with the usual flange for connection to the end by double seaming.

In the drawing Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view showing a container embodying the invention.

Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional View through the upper end of the container before the rip strip has been removed.

Figure 3 is a view showing the rip strip removed and the end lifted from the container body.

The invention is directed to an easy open- 59 ing container wherein the body portion is provided with score lines spaced from each other and arranged adjacent the upper end of the container, thus forming a rip strip which may be torn away for releasing the end from the container. l/Vithin the container body is preferably arranged a reelosure collar which is secured to the container body and which projects upwardly above the lower score line so that the upper edge of the collar, when the 49 rip strip is torn away, forms the upper edge of the container body. The present invention has to do particularly with the forming of a reclosure collar which is attached to the end after it is released for the purpose of cooperating with the inserted collar attached to the body for reclosing the container. tending folded portion which depends below the upper score line. The body wall is folded upwardly at the lower end of said depending portion, and the upwardly extending portion projects above the fold in the body wall so as as to provide a flange and a portion which may be attached to the end by double seaming.

Referring more in detail to the drawing the invention is shown as applied to a container which includes a body portion 1 to to which an end 2 is secured by a double seam The body wall is provided with an inwardly projecting bead 4 and with an inwardly projecting portion 5 which provides a shoulder 6. Inserted within the can body, after it c has been shaped into cylindrical form, is a reclosure collar 7. Said collar is provided with a series of lugs 8 struck up from the collar and bent outwardly so that when the collar is placed in the container body the {c lower edge of the collar rests on the upper wall of the bead 4, and the lugs 8 will spring behind the shoulder 6 and thus firmly hold the inserted collar in place. The body wall is provided with a score line 9 and also a i score line 10. Between the score line is a rip strip 11 to which a key may be attached for winding the rip strip onto the key and rupturing the body on the score lines, thus releasing the end from the container body.

The body wall of the container is folded back upon itself as indicated at 12. The upper fold is indicated at 13. This inwardly and downwardly folded portion 12 lies flat against the inner face of the body wall. The inwardly folded part is again folded at 14 upwardly so that it extends well above the fold 13. This provides a depending collar formed from the body wall, which depending v collar extends below the upper score line 10. it? The inserted collar 7 is of such diameter that the dependingv collar 12 extends downwardly outside of the collar 7. The body wall projecting above the fold 13 is flanged in the usual way, and this flange is rolled into a double seam 15 which connects the body to the upper end 16.

The depending portion 12 makes contact with the inner face of the outer wall of the container body, in the region directly below the upper score line. The inserted collar 7 makes contact with the inner face of the wall of the container body in the region directly above the score line 9. hen the rip strip is being torn away it will be rolled along a solid foundation consisting of the inserted collar 7 and a folded collar 12. After the rip strip is torn away the end 16 is provided with this depending folded collar which has a frictional slip connection with the outer wall of the collar 7. The end can be readily removed at any time and replaced by slipping the col lar 12 down over the collar 7. During the opening of the container there is no spilling of the contents as the two collars are in engagement with each other.

It will also be noted that the fold 13 extends well up in rear of the double seam, so that the pressure on the metal incident to the forming of the double sea-m does not in any way disturb the metal at the score line 10.

While there has been shown a specific form of inserted collar secured to the body by spring locking lugs, it will be understood that other types of inserted collars may be used as the present invention is directed particu larly to the depending collar attached to the end which is released and the construction of the same.

It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction and the arrangement of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention set forth in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. An easy opening container having score lines in the body wall adjacent one end thereof thereby forming a rip strip, said body wall being folded upon itself so as to provide a depending portion adapted to contact with the inner face of the body wall and said depending portion being folded upwardly upon itself and extending above said first named fold in the body wall, so as to permit the upwardly extending portion to be double seamed to the upper end of the container, and an inserted collar located within the body portion, means for securing said inserted collar to said body portion, the upper end of said inserted collar overlapping and contacting with the lower portion of the depending collar formed by the folding of the body wall.

2. An easy opening container having score lines in the body wall adjacent one end thereof forming a rip strip, said body wall being folded inwardly and downwardly upon itself so as to provide a depending collar extending below the upper score line, the said depending portion being folded upwardly upon itself and thence outwardly above the upper fold to provide a flange for seaming, an en having a depression therein adapted to extend into the container body and an outwardly ex- 7 I ALFRED L.
