- lar that is attached to the end when the rip strip is removed.
An objectof the invention is to provide a container wherein the re-closure collar is formed by a foloing of the metal of the body wall inwardly upon itself so as to pro vide a depending portion extending below the upper score line, and wherein said body wall and end are so shaped as to be seamed together without requiring any sharp folds or bends in the doubled body Wall.
In the drawing- Figure l is a View partly in section of a container embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view through a portion of the body wall and the end showing the parts seamed together;
Fig. 3 is a view showing the shaping of the flange of the can end and the coating applied thereto which is used in the sealing of the end to the body wall, and
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but showing the rip strip removed and the end separated from the container body.
The invention is directed to an easy open- 5: 1? ing container which includes a body portion having score lines formed therein adjacent one end thereof, thus setting off the rip strip to which a key may be attached for tearing the same away to release the end from the container body. Located within the container body preferably is an inserted collar which is attached to the container body and terminates at a point adjacent the end which is attached to the body. The body wall while in the blank form is folded upon itself so as to provide an inwardly and downwardly extending portion which lies flat against the inner face of the body wall and which extends downwardly to a point well beneath the upper score line. The folded portion of the body wall above the upper score line is flared outwardly so that it gradually increases in diameter on the outer face thereof from a point adjacent the score line to the upper end of the body wall. The end has a Serial No. 507,955.
depressed portion which fits snugly within the mouth of the body wall of the container. The end is also provided with a flange which projects outwardly over the folded end of the body wall. A sealing material is applied to the under face of the flange of the end, and after the end has been inserted, the flange is bent inwardly so as to lie flat against itself, and downwardly so as to snugly engage the outer face of the container body. This crowds the sealing material upwardly and seals the joint between the end and the body wall.
.Referring more in detail to the drawing,
.the container consists of a body wall 1 to which an end 2 is attached by a double seam 3. The wall of the body portion is provided with an inwardly projecting bead 4, also with an inset 5 forming a shoulder 6. An inserted collar 7 is placed within the containu or body. This inserted collar 7 snugly fits the inset portion 5.. The collar has lugs 8 struck up therefrom which project outwardly, and when the collar is placed so that the lower end thereof engages the upper wall of the bead l, the lugs 8 will engage beneath the shoulder 6 and thus firmly hold the collar attached to the container body. The wall of the container body while in the blank form is folded inwardly and downwardly so as to provide a collar portion 9. This depending collar portion extends well below the upper score line 10. The lower score line is indicated at ll, and between the score lines 10 and 11 is a rip strip 12 which is wound on to a key for separating the end from the body portion. When the end is separated from the body portion, this depending collar 9 remains attached to the end. The folded portion of the body wall from the score line to the upper end 18 is flared outwardly so that the diameter of thes outer face of the body wall from the score line 10 to the upper end thereof gradually increases. The upper end is indicated at 14. This end is provided with a (lepressed portion forming a wall 15 which contacts with the inner wall of the container body when the end is placed on the container. Said end has an outwardly extending flange 16 which is curled downwardly and inwardly as indicated at 17. The under face of the flange 16 is coated with a sealing material as indi *ated at 18. This may be in any suitable form of plastic sealing material. The end is seated in the container body and supported by a chuck therein, afte which the flange 16 and the curled portion 17 are inwardly bent so as to provide a folded back portion 19 and a depending portion 20 which snugly and frictionally engage the outer wall of the flared end of the container body. The metal parts including the vertical wall 15, the foldbody wall and the folded outer portion the flange of the end are firmly pressed together into parallelism, and this provides a very tight frictional grip between the end and the body wall. The sealing material during this oining of the metal parts iscrowded upwardly and forced into the space at the upper end of the body wall, thus forming a very tight seal between the end and the body wall. The depending collar 9 is so sped that it frictionally engages the outer face of the collar 7. hese parts are in contact when the rib strip is removed, and this prevents any spilling of the contents during the rolling of the rip strip on to the key, even though the can body is turned down on its side to facilitate the rem val of the rip strip. The depending collar 9 and the collar 7 combine to form a support for the rip strip as it is rolled on to the key.
It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let tors-Patent, is
1. An easy opening container comprising a body portion having spaced score lines adjacent one end thereof forming a rip strip, the wall of said body portion being folded inwardly upon itself to form a depending col lar extending below the upper score line, said folded body from the upper score line to the upper end of the body wall being flared or tapered outwardly so as to provide a surface of increasing diameter from the upper score line to the end of the body wall, an end having a central depressed portion providing a vertical wall adapted to fit within the mouth of the container body, said end having a projecting flange extending over the end of the body wall, said flange of the end when secured to the body wall having an upwardly extending portion contacting with the outer face of the wall of the container body and terminating adjacent the upper end of the body wall, and a sealing material filling the space between the flange and the upper end of the body wall, and an inserted collar attached to the body and having the upper portion thereof overlying and contacting with the inner Gil of faces of the depending collar formed by the folding of the body wall.
2. An easy opening container comprising a body portion having spaced score lines adjacent one end thereof forming a rip strip, the wall of said body portion being folded inwardly upon itself to form a depending collar extending below the upper score line, said folded body from the upper score line to the upper end of the body wall being flared or tapered outwardly so as to provide a surface of increasing diameter from the upper score line to the end of the body Wall, an end having a central depressed portion providing a vertical wall adapted to fit within the mouth of the container body, said end having a projecting flange extending over the end of the body wall, which flange is adapted to be bent downwardly and inwardly into frictional contact with the outer wall of the container body, and an inserted collar attached to the body and having the upper portion thereof overlying and contacting with the inner faces of the depending collar formed by the folding of the body Wall.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature.
ALFRED L. KRONQUEST.
