APPLIGATION FILED 111111.11, 1910. y
WILLIAM M. SHEWRY, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COLLAR.
Speoiication of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 9, 191,12.
Application led April 8, 1910. Serial No.f-554,152.
To all whom t may concern.
Be itjlmown'fthat I,l I'VILLIAM M. SHnwnY, a citi'zen ofthe` United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, State of Illinois,
'have vinvented a certain new and useful Im- A further object of my invention is to?.
produce a collar which may be fastened in Y the back not only in the manner above. de-
scribed but also by slip )ing a portion there* of under a portion of tie neckband or under a loop carriedby the'neck band or an adjacent portion of the shirt.
yThe various features of novelty whereby my invention is characterized will, herein-v after be pointed out with particularity inI the claims; but for a full understanding of my invention and of its object and advantages, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a collar containing my improvements; Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 2-3 of Fig. l showing the manner of using the collar with a button; and Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig.-2 showing the method of attaching the collar where no button is used. I
Referring to the drawing, A represents a collar of any style or type. On the inside of the collar and at the back thereof are ,two tabs B. These tabs are fastened at their lower ends adjacent to the bottom of the collar and project upwardly on the inner side of the'collar. The tabs are arranged close together, their adjacent edges even touching each other if desired; thereby forming a long upright slit or passagway C 'between the same. Theupper ends of the tabs are preferably rounded at the inner corners, vas indicated at b so as to provide a Haring mouth at the upper end of the -slit or passage.`
,In using the collar upon a shirt having the usual button or stud at the back, it is only necessary to, bring theslit between the'` two tabs beneath and in alinement with the stem of the button or stud, indicated at D in Fig. 2, and then to push the collar up until fthev stem enters the slit. When the collar is fastened at the front in the usual way it cannot become disengaged at the back because it is prevented from dropping down by the body of the wearer. Tomove the collar it is simply linbuttoned atithe.
front and is then withdrawn downwardly at the back.
In the 'preferred form of my invention the tabs are only secured adjacent to their lower ends, the body of the tabs being left free. This is for the purpose of permitting l j the4 tabs to be slipped under a portion of the neck band or a loop as indicated at E, inv
Fig. 3; the neck band being indicated as E'. Thus the same collargmay'be secured in two different ways. However, if itis not desired to form the collar so that it maybe secured by slipping a tab under a neck band vor loop, the sides and even the upper edges of the tabs could be secured to the collar as.
this would not interfere with Athe ready en gagement of the tabs with the button. n The two tabs may be formed in. various ways, but I believel the best and cheapest-..-- way vis to make them separate from each other and not out of the same piece because; vthis permits them to -be turned in at their adjacent edges d to be seamed; thereby 'making the adjacent edges stift' when starched and ironed so as to make the interlocking connection between the collar and the button irm and secure.v
Vhiie I have illustrated and described with particularity only a single form of my invention I do not desire to be limited to the specific details so illustrated and described;
but intend coveringall constructions and ar- `Y rangements which fall within the terms employed in the definitions of my invention in the appended claims. l.
I claim: I
1. A. collar having two independent tabsv secured to the inner side at the back thereof, said tabs'lying side by side with their adjacent edges close together, said tabs being,
secured only at their lower ends so as to form between them a slit openv at the top.
j 2. A'colllar havingv two tabs secured'at their lower ends to the inner side at the back thereof, Said tubs lying side by side with In testimony whereof, l sign this Specifitheii" adjacent exigen (bloe tngetlnii so :is t0 i cation in the presence of two Witnesses.
'I' f '."'fT. form between tnem a sht open :1t the top, AM M SML RX sind adJnCent edges gradually receding from each other :idlaeent to the top so as to form a mouth leadlng to `the slit.
